AJ Foyt Racing have become the latest IndyCar team to sign a reserve driver as Toby Sowery joins for the remainder of the 2026 season. The Brit had been in a reserve and development driver role for RLL through the 2025 campaign.

The 29-year-old is no stranger to racing in the US. He previously competed in Indy NXT in 2019, 2021 and 2023. His best result came in the first of those seasons, ending up P3 in points behind Oliver Askew and Rinus VeeKay.

However, his name really appeared in the IndyCar paddock in an impressive way in 2024. Sowery drove in three rounds (Mid-Ohio, Toronto and Portland) for DCR that season. He finished P13, P15 and P17. Despite those strong showings, he is yet to get a full-time opportunity in IndyCar.

Toby Sowery on becoming an IndyCar reserve driver for AJ Foyt Racing

“I’m really proud to be joining AJ Foyt Racing for 2026.

“When I first met Larry last year, it was clear we shared the same core values, integrity, accountability and doing things the right way.

“There’s a clear vision for where the team is going, and that’s something I wanted to be part of.

“The way A.J. approached his career with his creativity, adaptability and pushing forward, is something I really respect. I’ll be ready when the opportunity comes.”

“My dad, A. J. Foyt, built this team’s name on grit, risk, and winning, and I’m honored he trusts me to carry it forward.

“We’re not here to protect the legacy, we’re here to reignite it. With Santino (Ferrucci) and very promising rookie Caio Collet leading the charge, this team is pushing forward with purpose.

“Toby Sowery will be pivotal to what we’re building; his versatility, voice, and background will help develop our next generation while opening the door to a new wave of partners and fans.”
