FP2 of the Formula E 2026 Sanya E-Prix weekend ended with Pascal Wehrlein topping the timing sheets. Closely behind him were Edoardo Mortara and Jake Dennis.
After FP1 concluded with Mortara, Dennis, and Nyck de Vries as the top three, the teams were ready to take on FP2.
FP2 at the Sanya E-Prix
With 40 minutes on the clock, the second Formula E free practice session began.
Most of the drivers were quick to leave the pits and head out for their warm-up laps. Pascal Wehrlein led the pack out on track. Yellow flags were briefly out with 34 minutes to go. However, the brief interruption was Dan Ticktum going too wide but quickly managing to turn the CUPRA KIRO car around.
The first to set an early benchmark for the session was Wehrlein with a 1:07.55. There was still plenty of time to improve, as the fastest time in FP1 was 1:05.616. The track conditions continued to evolve.
Halfway point
As 20 minutes of FP2 had passed, there were 20 more to go. After a relatively quiet first half of the session, the drivers headed back out on track.
The halfway point saw Mortara, Buemi, and da Costa in the top three. Soon after, Mahindra teammate de Vries took the top spot. The new benchmark moved to 1:05.537.
da Costa and Oliver Rowland had a quarrel in Turn 9. da Costa went wide before seeing the side of Rowland. Luckily, the drivers managed to avoid a bigger incident and continued their laps. da Costa was noted for the incident.
Meanwhile, Günther was sliding out of Turn 4 but managed to keep the car on track.
Last push before Qualifying for the 2026 Sanya E-Prix
Time was ticking as the drivers got in their last laps of Free Practice.
The Mahindra drivers remained very strong throughout the session. Both drivers were consistently near the top. The rest of the drivers had tight lap time gaps. More yellow flags were out as several drivers went too wide and into the run-off area. Ticktum found himself close to the wall, but took control to keep the car on track.
As FP2 came to an end, Wehrlein found himself on top of the timings with a lap time of 1:05.095. Behind him were Mortara and Dennis.
After getting in as much practice as they could, Qualifying was next for the Formula E grid. With grid penalties and close gaps, the weekend was shaping up to be interesting.
