Under Formula 1 regulations, each full-time driver must give up their car to a rookie driver in two practice sessions during the season. As a result, Ferrari, Racing Bulls, Haas, Williams, Audi and Aston Martin all fielded alternative drivers during the opening practice session in Austria. Dino Beganovic, Paul Aron, Luke Browning, Ayumu Iwasa, Ryo Hirakawa and Jak Crawford were the rookies partaking in the session.
FP1 got off to a difficult start for Max Verstappen, who reported anti-stall issues and was forced to return to the Red Bull garage early on. It appeared that both Verstappen and Hadjar were experiencing problems with their Red Bull-powered machinery.
Mercedes showed strong pace throughout the session, with both cars featuring prominently near the top of the timing screens as the teams worked through their programmes.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris was unable to participate in most of FP1 after his McLaren suffered a hydraulic issue, keeping the Briton in the garage for the first 45 minutes of the session.
Pérez came to a halt on track, bringing out a red flag to conclude the session.
At the end of the hour, Antonelli topped the timesheets with a lap of 1:07.796, finishing ahead of Russell in second and Piastri in third.
Of the rookie drivers, Beganovic was the quickest for Ferrari in P9, ending the session ahead of Iwasa in P15 and Aron in P17.
