Drivers prepare for close oval racing.
Josh Pierson became the first driver to break into the 177-mph range, recording a 177.229 during the opening stages of the 50-minute session.
The speed ramped up as Niels Koolen moved to the top with a 178.723, with 30 minutes remaining.
Seventeen-year-old Max Garcia was the next driver to enter the 178-mph range, prducing a 178.032 mph.
Alessandro de Tullio received a drive-through penalty for blocking Salvador de Alba. After serving the penalty, he returned to the track on a set of sticker tires, starting the qualifying runs.
Qualifying simulations changed the order.
Jordan Missig moved into second with a 178.103 mph before Enzo Fittipaldi climbed to the top of the standings with a 178.909. Pierson responded with a 178.988, reclaiming first from earlier in the session.
Jack Beeton also moved into the top six after setting a speed of 178.004 mph.
Myles Rowe, who won the previous oval race, initially struggled with the handling of his car. His speed of 177.460 mph placed him 14th.
Hughes struck in the final seconds
With less than one minute remaining, Rowe found additional pace and recorded a 178.464 mph, moving into fifth place.
With only 25 seconds remaining, Lochie Hughes completed a huge lap at 179.235 mph to take the top spot from Andretti Global teammate Pierson.
The checkered flag flew shortly afterward, with Hughes leading teammate Pierson to complete an Andretti Global 1-2.
