Caitlyn McDaniel has taken a clear step forward during her 2026 GB4 campaign as the Nitrous Competitions ADM Racing driver continues to close the gap to the front of the field.
The 19-year-old American entered her rookie season in 2025 with only a handful of kart races behind her, leaving her with considerably less experience than many of her rivals. However, a full year of single-seater competition has now given McDaniel a stronger foundation, while returning to familiar circuits has allowed her to focus increasingly on performance rather than simply learning each venue.
That experience has already translated into stronger results. McDaniel has matched her best race finish, significantly reduced her deficit to the leading drivers and surpassed her previous best Qualifying performance. She has also exceeded her 2025 points tally with three race events still remaining.
McDaniel takes confidence from her racecraft in 2026 GB4 Championship
Although McDaniel continues to search for more outright pace, her ability to move forward during races has emerged as one of the strongest aspects of her campaign. In particular, she leads the standings for points earned through positions gained in Race 3, sitting three points clear of every other driver in that category.
For McDaniel, that statistic reflects an area of her driving that she particularly values.
“My race craft is something that is really important to me,” she acknowledged, while speaking to GB4. “I’m just trying to find the last little bit of pace that I need to be higher on the grid.”
Her ability to make progress from lower starting positions has demonstrated what she can achieve once racing begins. However, it has also highlighted the next challenge in her development.
If McDaniel can qualify further up the order, she believes she can use that same racecraft to fight closer to the front.
Qualifying pace becomes the next target
McDaniel has already reduced the deficit that separated her from the leading drivers during her rookie campaign. Nevertheless, she recognises that finding additional one-lap pace could unlock another major step.
Her improvement across the season has given her confidence that stronger results can follow if she starts races from more competitive positions.
“Knowing I can fight when I have better pace and placed higher up the grid is encouraging. So now it’s just about learning where that pace deficit is and trying to find that last bit I need to be higher up.”
That focus marks an important change from her first season.
McDaniel initially had to build basic circuit experience while adapting to the demands of single-seater racing. Now, with a full campaign behind her, she can devote more attention to identifying smaller performance differences and understanding where she can gain time.
As a result, Qualifying represents one of the clearest areas where further progress could transform her weekends.
Experience gives McDaniel a stronger foundation
McDaniel’s development carries additional significance because of how little racing experience she possessed before entering GB4.
She stepped into the championship after competing in only a small number of kart races, while many of her rivals had already accumulated years of competition. Therefore, her first season required her to learn racecraft, circuits and single-seater driving at the same time.
Her second campaign has provided a very different challenge.
Instead of approaching each weekend almost entirely from scratch, McDaniel can now return to circuits with previous knowledge and compare her performance directly with what she achieved one year earlier.
That familiarity has helped her close the gap to the front, improve her Qualifying performances and score more points than she managed throughout her rookie year.
Moreover, she still has three events available to extend those gains.
Snetterton brings McDaniel back to where her journey began
The next stage of McDaniel’s development carries particular significance as she returns to Snetterton.
Just over 18 months ago, the Norfolk circuit became the venue where she first drove a racing car. Now, she returns with almost two seasons of GB4 experience and a far greater understanding of what she needs from herself and the car.
The circuit could also suit some of McDaniel’s strengths.
She believes older, narrower and more technical venues naturally complement her driving, although she continues to approach every circuit as another opportunity to identify both strengths and weaknesses.
“I think I do better at the old school twisty-turny tracks, I think something about being closer to the walls and being a thinner track makes me excel. Every track is about learning and figuring out where you’re good, and finding ways to improve on the things you’re not good at. I need to find out on where I can improve, and that will be essential during testing.”
Testing therefore gives McDaniel an important opportunity to refine the areas that still separate her from stronger grid positions.
Rather than simply relying on her affinity for the circuit, she wants to understand precisely where she can improve and use that knowledge throughout the weekend.
McDaniel targets another step forward in 2026 GB4 campaign
McDaniel’s second GB4 campaign has already shown how quickly experience can reshape a driver’s performance.
A year ago, she entered weekends with one of the largest experience deficits on the grid. Now, she has matched her best race result, improved substantially in Qualifying, exceeded her previous points total and established herself as one of the championship’s strongest drivers when it comes to gaining positions.
Her racecraft has consequently become a clear strength.
However, McDaniel has also identified the area that could make the biggest difference next. Finding the final amount of qualifying pace would give her the opportunity to start closer to the drivers she already believes she can race.
With three events remaining and a return to the circuit where her car-racing career began, Snetterton offers another chance to demonstrate just how far she has progressed — and how much further she can still climb.
