Joel Eriksson has admitted that Envision Racing’s decision not to retain him for 2026/27 Formula E season came as surprise. The Swede now aims to end his final weekend with the team on a high at the London E-Prix.
Envision confirmed ahead of season finale that Eriksson and Buemi will leave the team at end of 2025/26 campaign. The announcement leaves Joel Eriksson facing an uncertain future as Formula E including Envision Racing, prepares to enter GEN4 era.
Speaking ahead of London E-Prix, Eriksson revealed that Envision Racing’s news caught him off guard. He also added that he had not yet had time to explore his options for next season.
Joel Eriksson wants to finish Envision stint strongly
Despite the unexpected news, Joel Eriksson said his approach to the final race weekend with Envision would remain unchanged.
“I’m going to approach it as normal,” Eriksson said. “Obviously it’s going to be a tough weekend, as the news came out yesterday. It came a little bit as a surprise; I wasn’t really prepared for it.”
Eriksson remains determined to deliver strong results for Envision before bringing his first full Formula E campaign with the team to an end.
“We’re going to do everything we can, obviously, to score as many points as possible for the team, to try to finish on a high,” he added.
“Nevertheless, we’re going to try to enjoy the weekend and try to see if there are any opportunities coming for next season.”
Joel Eriksson joined Envision’s full-time line-up for the 2025/26 season alongside Buemi, after making several substitute appearances for the team. His rookie campaign has included a standout podium at Shanghai E-Prix, where he charged through the field to finish third.
Formula E future remains uncertain
With his departure only confirmed shortly before London weekend, Eriksson admitted that he has not yet had opportunity to begin discussions about his next move.
“Not really, to be honest, because the news came pretty late,” he said when asked whether he already had plans for next season.
“I wasn’t really prepared for it. So I haven’t really had the time to speak to someone else. So yeah, we have to see, whatever comes.”
Envision’s news leaves 27-year-old Eriksson uncertain with several possibilities as Formula E driver market develops ahead of GEN4 era.
Eriksson confirmed that remaining within the Formula E paddock is his preference. However, he does not know whether that would be in a racing or a reserve role.
“I think I will be within the paddock, but I’m not sure if it’s going to be as a race driver or a reserve driver,” he explained.
Eriksson keeping Formula E ambitions alive
About his future in Formula E, Eriksson revealed that he is keen to continue in the championship in future.
“I’m going to try my best to stay in FE, because this is a championship I would like to be in,” he said.
For now, however, Joel Eriksson’s immediate priority remains the London E-Prix and closing his Envision chapter with a strong result.
The London double-header marks final two races of 2025/26 Formula E season and the conclusion of the GEN3 era. Envision Racing will enter the weekend seventh in the Teams’ Championship. The team will be looking to end the season strongly before the transition towards GEN4.
For Eriksson, the weekend provides one final opportunity to add to his points tally and build on his breakthrough Shanghai podium. It can potentially strengthen his case for a place on the Formula E grid next season.
