With only three races left in the season, Milwaukee brings the title fight to the forefront of everyone’s minds. Enzo Fittipaldi leads Nikita Johnson by 1 point, with Tymek Kucharczyk only 18 points behind.
Green flag for 50 minutes of practice
Myles Rowe set the first fast time of the session at 147.523 mph as the field headed out on track. Less than five minutes into the session, there were already drivers going three wide around the track as they got practice in for Sunday and the race.
Reigning Milwaukee Mile winner Salvador de Alba is back in the HMD Motorsports No. 17 this weekend and returned to the top of the timesheet with a 148.043 mph lap.
Max Garcia is continuing his strong run of form, slotting into third with a 147.121.
Nikita Johnson jumps in front of him with a 147.406. Championship rival Fittipaldi is off to a slow start, in 18th with a 142.534.
10 minutes into the session and Nicolas Stati puts in a 147.663 to slot into second place. He follows it up with a 149.566 for first place. Most of the drivers are cycling through pitlane for new tyres or set-up changes.
Matteo Nannini jumps to second with a 148.404, followed by Bryce Aron’s 148.344 and de Alba’s 148.044.
New tyres for the field in Milwaukee
With the majority of the field on new tyres, the timesheet is shuffling around every lap. Fittipaldi jumps to the top with a 150.196, followed by Johnson in second with a 150.073.
Mr. Saturday, Alessandro de Tullio has a chance to tie the Indy NXT record for poles this weekend, but is in 23rd with a 146.394.
Seb Murray has made it up to ninth, followed by teammate Max Taylor. Kucharczyk is 11th with a 148.054.
This is the last race of the season for de Alba, and he is in 12th with a 148.044, ahead of Colin Kaminsky’s 147.995.
Jacob Abel is continuing in the Abel Motorsports No. 48 and is in 18th place with a 147.289. He is ahead of Lochie Hughes, who is still in the mathmatical fight for the championship.
With 15 minutes to go, Abel jumped up into sixth before improving further to fourth with a 149.182.
Caution with 8 minutes to go
Carson Etter jumped up to fifth with a 149.766, slotting between Johnson and Stati.
With 8 minutes to go, Rowe loses the rear of the car going into turn 2 and hits the wall, bringing out the sole yellow of the session.
A short yellow, and the track goes green with three minutes to go and the field begins qualifying simulations.
A big shuffle in the timesheet brings Garcia to first and Correa just behind him. De Alba jumps up, before being shuffled down to eighth.
The checkered flag flies with Beeton in first with a 152.149, ahead of Correa and Kucharczyk.
Championship leader Fittipaldi ended up in 9th, with Nikita Johnson in P4 as the three title contenders all finished inside the top 10.
