Ocon slams “old school” rule after Albon restart controversy at F1 2026 Dutch GP

Esteban Ocon’s 2026 F1 Dutch GP took a frustrating turn at the restart. Race control placed him back behind Alexander Albon, despite his belief that he had legitimately overtaken the Williams driver before the red flag came out.

Ocon called the rule governing track position at red flags outdated. A power unit failure then ended his race early, mirroring a similar issue for teammate Ollie Bearman at Zandvoort.

Ocon defends his overtake on Albon at 2026 F1 Dutch GP

Ocon moved ahead of Albon before officials showed a red flag following Max Verstappen’s crash. Race control then reinstated the original running order for the restart.

Ocon explained why he believed the position should have stood as he only passed the Thai when he saw green panels.

“I overtook Alex but I had the right because it was green. What was a big shame is that you have to take all these risks, you are playing with either getting a penalty or not.”

A significant amount of racing had taken place between his move on Albon and the red flag, in his view, and he felt he had done enough to keep the position.

“It’s been like that forever but really that was 20 metres earlier than I was having the place but we still raced for one and a half sector. The red flag only came after turn five so we passed sector one and we were getting into sector two so I should have started in front of Alex because that changed my race.”

Questioning F1’s reliance on outdated timing rules

Formula 1’s method for determining track position at the moment of a red flag has not kept pace with the timing technology available to the sport, Ocon suggested.

“Yeah but we are not going to believe that in Formula 1 we don’t have timing loops every 20 metres. It’s a very old school rule really.”

He had raised concerns over team radio before the restart, sensing that officials would move Albon back ahead of him regardless of where the overtake actually happened on track.

“I don’t know but for me, I said it on the radio, let’s not make Alex go in front again at the restart because that should not be the case. And for some reason I felt it that they were going to put him in front again. So even if they change the rule they still take the line which is like two kilometres back. So it shouldn’t be like that, it shouldn’t be the last moment.”

Power unit failure ends the race early for Ocon

A mechanical issue ended Ocon’s 2026 Dutch GP prematurely, separate from the restart dispute. He described losing drive suddenly, likening the sensation to a go-kart locking up.

“It’s a PU related issue, the rear wheels seized like go-karts and I had no drive after turn three so it’s something related to the power unit.”

The failure marked Haas’s first reliability issue of the season, Ocon noted, after a trouble-free campaign on that front up to that point. He also briefly spoke about Alonso making a single stop once the GP resumed.

“I think Fernando did a really good strategy, I don’t think we could have done the same one without degradation but there are things that we can look into to do a better job. It’s the first reliability problem so far this season, it’s been bulletproof on that side. Obviously it’s the two cars so it’s not ideal for this race but we’ll look into everything.”
