Friday was a good start to the weekend for Mercedes. George Russell led Kimi Antonelli in a 1-2 in FP1, with the Italian topping the times in the second session later in the day.

Ferrari also had a strong day. Charles Leclerc was 3rd and 2nd across the sessions, with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton one place behind in FP1 and FP2.

Racing Bulls were hugely impressive in FP2 as Arvid Lindblad was 4th. Yuki Tsunoda backed it up in 8th. There was a blot on the copy book as the British rookie crashed at the rapid turn 13 as he lost the rear. A chassis change was required.

Red Bull had a mixed day. Max Verstappen was in the top 6 in both sessions, while Liam Lawson was 10th. However, both drivers did not enjoy the balance or feeling in the car.

Down at McLaren, Lando Norris missed FP2 as his gearbox broke. The World Champion was 6th in FP1. The team struggled with pace generally as Oscar Piastri was 8th and 7th on Friday.

Esteban Ocon impressed as the Haas driver finished inside the top 10 in the second session. Alpine and Audi also looked competitive in the fierce midfield battle, although Racing Bulls looked to be clear of it based on FP2.

Williams, Aston Martin and Cadillac were at the back and looked set to be ones to be out in Q1.

Drama in FP3

There was key incidents in FP3. Alex Albon hit the wall at turn 20, breaking his left rear suspension despite it being a relatively small touch.

Lewis Hamilton then crashed in the final corner as he carried too much speed and found the outside barrier. He eventually stopped in the middle sector after multiple calls from Ferrari to pull off as his front wing was under the car.

Right at the end of FP3, Ollie Bearman lost the rear in the high-speed turns 9 and 10, ending up in the wall. The damage was significant, although the driver was thankfully fine.
