Bastian Buus put championship-leading Lionspeed GP on top during Free Practice 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the final round of the 2026 GT World Challenge (GTWC) Europe Sprint Cup got underway.
The Danish driver produced a 1:40.389 in the #80 Porsche 911 GT3 R EVO he shares with Ricardo Feller, beating Gold Cup leader Alex Aka by 0.219s. Lucas Auer followed in third for Winward Racing, while Andrea Frassineti and Marvin Dienst ensured that the Silver and Bronze Cup leaders also featured inside the overall top five.
The result gave Lionspeed GP the ideal start to a weekend in which Buus and Feller can secure the Sprint Cup crown. The pair arrived in Barcelona 5.5 points clear of Arthur Leclerc and Thomas Neubauer after taking the championship lead during Zandvoort Race 2.
Buus starts Barcelona title push on top
Lionspeed GP entered Barcelona with the advantage in an exceptionally close Sprint Cup title fight, and Buus immediately underlined the #80 Porsche’s pace during the opening 80-minute practice session. His 1:40.389 established a benchmark that none of the other 43 cars could beat and placed the championship leader more than two tenths clear of the field.
The strong start continued an impressive Sprint Cup campaign for Buus and Feller. Buus had already put the Porsche third during the opening practice session at Brands Hatch, while the pairing subsequently emerged as genuine title contenders through a combination of outright pace and major results. Most recently, second place at Zandvoort moved them to the top of the standings ahead of the Barcelona finale.
Their position remains far from secure, however. Leclerc and Neubauer began the weekend only 5.5 points behind, while Barcelona local Dani Juncadella sat another half-point back. Defending champions Charles Weerts and Kelvin van der Linde also remained within nine points of the lead, with eight crews mathematically capable of claiming the title before the final two races.
Aka leads Gold Cup from second overall
Aka emerged as Buus’ closest challenger and produced another strong practice performance for Tresor Attempto Racing. The German set a 1:40.608 in the #99 Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II, placing himself second overall while comfortably leading the Gold Cup runners.
Although Aka could not match Buus’ benchmark, he finished only 0.219s away from the Porsche and held a 0.066s advantage over Auer. The Winward Racing driver recorded a 1:40.674 in the #48 Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO he shares with Maro Engel, putting another championship contender among the leading three.
Auer and Engel entered the finale as outsiders in the title battle and therefore needed a near-perfect weekend to overturn their deficit. Nevertheless, third in FP1 offered the experienced pairing a positive start as they attempted to keep their championship hopes alive.
Further down the Gold Cup order, Gilles Magnus and Robin Knutsson put the #10 Boutsen VDS Porsche 12th overall. Tommaso Mosca and Matías Zagazeta followed two places behind in the #51 AF Corse Ferrari, while Loris Spinelli and Mattia Michelotto placed the VSR Lamborghini 18th.
Frassineti puts Silver Cup inside overall top four
Frassineti produced one of the standout performances of the session by placing the #66 Tresor Attempto Racing Audi fourth overall. His 1:40.894 left him 0.505s behind Buus and gave the Silver Cup crew a substantial advantage over its nearest class rival.
The result also gave Tresor Attempto Racing two cars inside the overall top four, with Aka second and Frassineti fourth. Aurelien Panis and Anthony Bartone provided the closest Silver Cup challenge in the #6 GetSpeed Team Bartone Bros Mercedes-AMG, although their 1:41.027 left them eighth overall and 0.133s behind Frassineti.
Mikkel Pedersen and Aliaksandr Malykhin placed third in class and 23rd overall for Pure Rxcing. Meanwhile, newly crowned Sprint Cup champions Matisse Lismont and Ignacio Montenegro finished 33rd for Team WRT. The pairing had already secured the Silver Cup title during the previous Zandvoort weekend, allowing them to enter Barcelona without championship pressure.
Dienst leads Bronze Cup as class contenders begin final battle
Dienst completed a remarkably diverse top five by setting the Bronze Cup benchmark for Winward Racing. The German recorded a 1:40.961 in the #87 Mercedes-AMG he shares with Rinat Salikhov, finishing only 0.572s away from the overall pace.
His performance carried additional significance because Dienst and Salikhov remained firmly involved in the Bronze Cup championship fight. Peter Dempsey and Eddie Cheever had taken control of the standings after completing a double victory at Zandvoort, but the Winward Racing pairing entered Barcelona as their most realistic challengers.
Fabian Schiller and Gabriel Rindone placed second among the Bronze Cup entries and 11th overall for GetSpeed Team Dubai. David Fumanelli and Marco Pulcini followed in third for Kessel Racing, while championship leaders Dempsey and Cheever ended FP1 30th overall in their Ziggo Sport Tempesta Racing Porsche.
With Gold Cup leader Aka second, Silver Cup leader Frassineti fourth and Bronze Cup leader Dienst fifth, every class featured among the overall leading five during the opening session. The spread highlighted both the strength of the class entries and the tightly matched nature of the 44-car Barcelona field.
Title rivals endure mixed opening session
Several of Lionspeed GP’s championship rivals began the weekend further down the order. Juncadella and Chris Lulham placed ninth in the #3 Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing entry with a 1:41.049, leaving them 0.660s behind Buus but comfortably inside the top 10.
Valentino Rossi and Max Hesse followed in 10th for Team WRT, while Weerts and Van der Linde could only manage 21st in the #32 BMW. Their 1:41.437 left the defending champions 1.048s away from the pace as they began a weekend in which they needed to recover nine points on the championship leaders.
Leclerc and Neubauer endured the most difficult session among the leading title contenders. The #50 AF Corse Ferrari finished 41st with a 1:42.395, more than two seconds slower than Buus. However, with FP1 focused on preparation rather than outright qualifying performance, the session provided only the first indication of the relative pace ahead of the title-deciding races.
Eastalent gravel trip interrupts running
Race Control briefly stopped the session after the #84 Eastalent Racing Audi ran into the gravel. Simon Reicher and Christopher Haase eventually returned to the circuit and completed enough running to place 17th overall with a 1:41.276.
Despite the interruption, every one of the 44 entries completed laps during FP1. The field also remained relatively compact, with 20 cars finishing within one second of Buus’ benchmark and the top 10 covered by 0.776s.
Lionspeed GP therefore ended the opening session in the strongest possible position as Buus and Feller began their final push for the championship. However, with eight crews still mathematically involved and two races remaining, FP1 offered only the opening indication of how the Barcelona title decider could unfold.
The full Barcelona FP1 classification from GT World Challenge Europe shows Buus and Feller at the head of the 44-car field ahead of Aka and Auer.
