Maximilian Günther placed sixth in the Berlin E-Prix after a very early pit boost stop and strong pace in the chaotic Formula E race. He was satisfied with his day, after placing his DS Penske car on fifth and managing the race well, even though the safety car denied him of a podium.
Strong day at Berlin E-Prix for Günther
“First of all, the support today from all the German fans and people from Berlin was incredible“, the German home hero said in a conversation with Pit Debrief after the race.
“The weather was terrible and yet so many people came here and endured the rain in the stands and cheered us on. That means a lot to me, and it’s always very special to ride here in Berlin.”
Regarding his day, Günther was very happy with the performance.
“With my day? Yes, really satisfied. Qualifying was great with fifth place on the grid and then the race was actually pretty well managed. In all respects, including the strategy.
“But of course the safety car completely ruined the race for us at the end. Under normal circumstances, we would have been in the fight for the podium, and so we were actually completely screwed in the end.
“And then we were actually pretty well served with sixth place, as we could have finished much further back without Attack Modes.”
Günther happy with early stop at Berlin E-Prix
Asked if the early stop for the pit boost was communicated before the race, Günther nodded.
“Yes, that was our normal strategy. And yes, I think it was good. We made up a few places with the pit stop. The pit stop was very fast, from what I saw.
“The outlaps or the laps in the pit stop window were also very, very strong.
“The strategy was obviously designed for no safety car, but the safety car obviously cost us.”
DSC Penske car is prepared for dry and wet conditions
On tomorrow’s race day, dry conditions are expected. Günther says, the car is prepared for dry and wet conditions, so he is looking forward to delivering a strong race.
“I think we are well-prepared for both conditions. Qualifying in the rain was great, I was in the top five. And the same in the race.
“I felt good at the start of the race when it was wet. And when it dried out, I think we were one of the fastest cars in the field.
“So from that point of view, yes, tomorrow will certainly be completely different conditions to today. But yes, we’re looking forward to the race.”
