Maximilian Günther delivered a great round-up on why the London E-Prix circuit is as unique as it is. He always has a good feeling coming to the capital of the United Kingdom due to that.

Hopes high to perform well on unique asphalt

In Berlin, Günther had said that the DS Penske car would perform well on all track. The 28-year-old hopes to deliver that performance despite the speciality of the London track.

“I hope so, yes. London is of course so special because we have so many different types of tarmac. Indoor part, outdoor part, lots of bumps.

“That’s why the car has to be set up a little differently than perhaps in Berlin or on faster tracks. We are ready for that and hope for a fast package this weekend.”

Regarding the tarmac, Pit Debrief went into detail to learn more about the interesting asphalt used in London, which is pretty unique.

“Yes, absolutely. That’s mega. We have ten different types of tarmac on this track, so it’s really extremely varied.

You have this indoor section, which has a lot of grip, like a bit of sandpaper. Then you have a normal tarmac outside, an old one from last year, a new one from last year.

We really have a lot of different grip conditions around the track. As a driver, you simply have to adapt very well, corner by corner.”

The difference between Gen3 and Gen3EVO around London

Günther also discussed the innovations and new challenges brought in by the Gen3EVO machinery, for the first times used in the London E-Prix. The German driver expanded on the areas more affected by the new generation of cars, which include qualifying.

“Of course, the all-wheel drive plays a big role in qualifying. You have a completely different driving style and much faster lap times.

“Apart from that, the tyres are different, you simply have more of this peak, so you can deliver more performance on this one lap than last year.

“Those are the two main differences, I would say. And yes, I would say it’s even more fun than last year.”

Günther has a good feeling heading into London E-Prix

The DS Penske driver admitted to be looking forward to the finals double header of the 2024-2025 season.

“I feel very good. London is a very special place, a mega circuit. I think we’ve had a very, very good season. We arrive here with a good feeling.

“We know that qualifying is very important because overtaking is not so easy on this track.”

Last year, the German had two strong races. However, both ended with an unfortunate DNF each. Nevertheless, the pace was there then and Günther can show it again this weekend.

“Yes, every year when I’m here in London, I have a really good feeling. I always have a lot of fun riding.

“The track is very, very demanding. I think that as a team we know pretty well what we have to do.

“I’m also aware that Formula E is simply so extremely tight that you always start from scratch. Just because you might have been fast last year, it’s not a foregone conclusion that you’ll be at the front again this year.

“But yes, I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
