Leonardo Fornaroli executed a strong victory in the F2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, capitalising on an early overtake and managing two Safety Car restarts to secure his second win of the season. The Italian was in complete control throughout the 18-lap contest, while chaos unfolded behind him.
Having started from the second row on the reverse grid, Fornaroli wasted no time in taking the lead from Ollie Goethe on the opening lap. Once in front, the Invicta Racing driver never looked back—setting the fastest lap before the race eventually finished behind the Safety Car.
Championship shake-up: Fornaroli up to third
With the win and the accompanying fastest lap bonus, Leonardo Fornaroli claimed 11 valuable points, bringing his total to 115. As a result, he leapfrogged Alex Dunne to move into third in the standings. More significantly, he now sits just seven points behind championship leader Richard Verschoor, who suffered a major blow after being forced to retire early due to car damage and fuel leakage.
Dunne, meanwhile, had shown strong pace throughout the 2025 F2 Belgian GP weekend, having topped both Free Practice and Qualifying. However, he could not convert that speed into a podium result in the Sprint. Although he climbed through the field in the early stages, he dropped back in the closing laps and had to settle for seventh, collecting only 2 points to bring his total to 110.
Verschoor’s retirement means he remains on 122 points, with his lead over second-placed Jak Crawford now cut to just six. Crawford’s own race ended in disaster, following first-lap contact with Browning and Verschoor—an incident that eliminated two key title contenders before the race had even begun in earnest.
Martins, Minì and Martí back in the mix
Victor Martins delivered a much-needed result for ART Grand Prix, finishing second and collecting 8 points, moving him up to 60 and into the top ten. Behind him, Gabriele Minì also enjoyed one of his strongest races of the year. The Alpine-backed driver showed pace and control as he surged to third, adding 6 points to reach 27 total, and moving up to 12th in the standings. His performance is timely, coming just as discussions around 2026 seats begin to heat up.
Pepe Martí picked up 4 points after finishing fifth, bringing his tally to 73, allowing him to overtake Montoya for seventh in the standings. Despite not making the podium, Martí’s progress reflects a strong midfield charge from the Campos Racing driver, who’s been consistently scoring in recent rounds.
Midfield tensions rise
Arvid Lindblad and Luke Browning both failed to score in the F2 Sprint at the 2025 Belgian GP, meaning their positions in the championship remain unchanged at 84 and 98 points respectively. Browning’s retirement—triggered by first-lap contact—has stalled the Briton’s upward trajectory after strong performances in recent rounds.
Meanwhile, Roman Staněk added three points to his total to reach 32, and Goethe’s fifth-place finish pushes him to 17, ahead of Villagoméz. Ritomo Miyata also moved up by a single point to 7 after a clean and consistent run.
One of the more dramatic moments came when Amaury Cordeel—running inside the top three at his home event—retired following contact with Martins on the Kemmel Straight. He remains on just 2 points, his best chance at a standout result this season cut short.
Tight at the top with five drivers in contention
With five rounds remaining, the battle for the 2025 F2 title remains wide open. Notably, Verschoor retains the lead on 122, but Crawford (116), Fornaroli (115), and Dunne (110) are all within 12 points of the top. Meanwhile, Browning is 24 points adrift but remains in mathematical contention heading into Sunday’s Feature Race.
Fornaroli’s Sprint victory adds further momentum to his campaign, and with Verschoor and Crawford both failing to finish, the championship narrative has taken another dramatic turn. Sunday’s F2 Feature Race at the 2025 Belgian GP will be another major opportunity for movement at both ends of the standings.
