Sunday’s Monaco Feature Race delivered high drama from the very beginning, reshaping the landscape of the 2025 FIA F2 Championship. Alexander Dunne had claimed pole position by just 0.003 seconds over Victor Martins and Leonardo Fornaroli, but his hopes evaporated within moments of lights out. A first-lap collision at Sainte Devote triggered a ten-car pile-up, eliminating several front-runners including Dunne and Martins. The red flag halted the race immediately, leaving marshals to clear the debris and teams to rethink their strategies.

Among the retirees were championship contenders Richard Verschoor, Pepe Martí, and Gabriele Minì. The crash also ended the races of Ritomo Miyata, Max Esterson, Cian Shields, Sami Meguetounif, and Amaury Cordeel. As the incident occurred before a full racing sector had been completed, race control opted for a rolling restart.

Revised grid and rolling restart

The grid reshuffle left Leonardo Fornaroli at the front, joined by Sebastián Montoya and Arvid Lindblad. The updated top fifteen featured several beneficiaries of the carnage, including Jak Crawford, Luke Browning, and Kush Maini. Fornaroli led cleanly off the rolling start, defending into Sainte Devote while Montoya and Lindblad kept him within reach.

Browning struggled to maintain pace and soon came under pressure from Maini. Further back, a Virtual Safety Car was deployed after Joshua Dürksen clipped the wall at La Rascasse, an incident compounded by earlier contact involving Maini.

Pit strategies and second Safety Car

Strategic calls began early. Oliver Goethe made the first pit stop on lap 6, followed by Dino Beganovic, Meguetounif, and John Bennett. Cian Shields entered the pits on lap 9. However, a critical moment unfolded when Beganovic crashed heavily at Casino, prompting a full Safety Car. This shift in race conditions created a pivotal opportunity.

Several drivers—including Crawford, Maini, Staněk, Cordeel, Villagómez, and Goethe—pitted under Safety Car conditions, gaining valuable track position. In contrast, Fornaroli, Montoya, and Lindblad missed the pit entry and were forced to stop under green-flag conditions a lap later. Crawford emerged in the net lead, while Montoya dropped behind Lindblad.

Penalties and Red Flag conclusion

Lindblad and Meguetounif received five-second penalties for pit lane speeding. These infringements would prove significant. As the race resumed, time was running out. A succession of delays and retirements led to a final red flag with just five minutes remaining. The race did not resume, locking in the results based on the last completed lap.

Surprise victory and standings shake-up

Jak Crawford took a surprise but well-earned victory, delivering a powerful result for DAMS Lucas Oil. Fornaroli claimed second, adding to his points haul from the Sprint Race. Montoya secured third—his first podium of the season.

Browning finished fourth, keeping his championship hopes alive. Lindblad crossed the line fifth but dropped down the order after his penalty. Maini took sixth, ahead of Staněk in seventh. Villagómez and Goethe finished eighth and ninth respectively, while Bennett claimed his first point in tenth.

Championship picture after Monaco

The standings following the chaotic Monaco weekend have changed dramatically. Luke Browning now leads the championship with 70 points, narrowly ahead of Alexander Dunne on 67. Fornaroli’s consistent performance pushes him to third with 64 points. Richard Verschoor, despite a pointless Sunday, remains in fourth with 59.
