Antonelli sets a new record

Qualifying for the F1 Chinese Grand Prix marked the first session since FP3 in Australia where George Russell did not top the timesheets. Instead, Kimi Antonelli secured pole position, becoming the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history at 19 years, six months and 17 days old.

Misfortunes for some

Several drivers encountered issues before the F1 Chinese Grand Prix even began. Both McLaren drivers, Alex Albon and Gabriel Bortoleto were unable to take the start due to separate problems that emerged shortly before the Grand Prix.

Albon also suffered a hydraulic issue, while Lance Stroll later retired from the race with a suspected battery issue. Alonso retired at the end of Lap 35, as he was suffering with the vibrations of the car to his hands.

Surprise battles

Both Alpine drivers and the Haas pair battled early for positions inside the top 10, benefiting from the DNS of both McLarens. Ocon later received a 10-second time penalty for a collision with Colapinto.

Behind the leader, Russell, Hamilton and Leclerc traded positions between P2 and P4, allowing Antonelli to build a comfortable gap at the front.

Max Verstappen retired his Red Bull on Lap 46 of 56.

Mercedes, Ferrari and Alpine finished with both drivers in the points, while Antonelli secured his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory at the Shanghai International Circuit. Hamilton also claimed his first Grand Prix podium with Ferrari.

Bearman finished P5, with Gasly, Lawson, Hadjar, Sainz and Colapinto closing out the top 10.
