The 2026 Formula Regional Americas Championship (FRAC) has opened with a fiercely competitive championship picture following Round 1 at NOLA Motorsports Park. After a weekend defined by three different race winners, multiple incidents, and shifting post-race penalties, Cooper Shipman leads the drivers’ standings with 58 points.

Crucially, Shipman’s advantage comes from consistency rather than dominance in any single race. By scoring across all three contests and sealing a Race 3 victory, he established himself as the most reliable performer of the opening weekend, which immediately placed him at the top of the early title fight.

A tight battle forms behind the leader

Behind Shipman, the fight for second place already looks intense and finely balanced. Evagoras Papasavvas sits second on 45 points after a standout debut weekend that included a Race 2 victory and strong pace across all sessions.

Just behind him, rookie Kekai Hauanio holds third on 39 points, while Christian Bogle follows closely on 38 points. As a result, only a single point separates third and fourth, underlining how quickly positions can change in this tightly packed field.

Further reinforcing the competitiveness, Luke Powers completes the top five on 33 points. With only 25 points covering the top five drivers, the early championship landscape already points towards a season decided by consistency and execution.

Midfield defined by recovery and missed opportunities

Although Brady Golan claimed a commanding Race 1 victory, his weekend ultimately proved inconsistent due to incidents and penalties in the remaining races. Consequently, he sits sixth on 29 points, still within reach of the leaders but already facing early pressure to recover ground.

Immediately behind, the midfield remains tightly compressed. Barrett Wolfe holds seventh on 16 points, narrowly ahead of James Lawley on 15 points and Eric Wisniewski, who also sits on 15 points.

Further down, rookies continue to adapt to the series while picking up valuable early points. Alejandro Bobadilla and Jonathan Cottrill share 10th and 11th on six points, while Whitney Strickland follows with three points, including strong Masters category performances.

At the lower end of the classification, Harbir Dass, Aidan Schuh, Kevin Janzen, Anthony Autiello, and Jake Pollock remain on zero points after a challenging opening round.

Just behind, Crosslink Motorsports sit on 84 points after a highly competitive showing that included pole position, a race win, and multiple front-running performances, despite setbacks that affected their final tallies.

Kiwi Motorsport hold third on 58 points, largely driven by Shipman’s consistent podium finishes and Race 3 win, which delivered a strong return to the team.

Further back, Hillenberg Motorsports occupy fourth with 18 points, while Atlantic Racing Team follow closely on 15 points. Meanwhile, MLT Motorsports and Momentum Motorsports round out the standings with six points and zero points respectively.

Early season points to a wide-open championship fight

Overall, the opening round has immediately established a tightly contested championship across both drivers and teams. Although Shipman holds the early lead, the small gaps behind him ensure that no clear favourite has yet emerged.

Moreover, the spread of winners across multiple teams highlights just how balanced the field appears in 2026. With performance fluctuating from race to race, consistency is already proving just as important as outright speed.

As the championship moves forward, the focus will quickly shift to execution under pressure. If Round 1 is any indication, the title fight will remain open, unpredictable, and highly competitive deep into the season.
