Race week for the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans officially began on Friday, 5 June, as Scrutineering opened the 94th edition of the legendary endurance race in the city centre.
Held at the place de la République, the first of two days of administrative and technical checks brought the cars, teams and drivers into the heart of Le Mans before track running begins at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Over the full Scrutineering process, 62 cars are being inspected by technical marshals, with Friday’s opening day featuring 39 competitors from Hypercar, LMP2 and LMGT3.
Before any car takes to the track, each prototype and GT entry must pass the required inspections. The checks cover regulations compliance, proper driver equipment and valid administrative documents. For the teams, it is an essential step before the competitive work begins. For the city, it is the moment when Le Mans week truly comes alive.
Scrutineering opened the week in the city centre
Scrutineering remains one of the traditions that makes the 24 Hours of Le Mans distinct. The event does not begin quietly inside the paddock. Instead, it starts in the centre of the city, surrounded by thousands of spectators.
On Friday, Place de la République became an open-air theatre for endurance racing. The cars were presented before inspection, drivers met the crowd, and the first major storylines of the 2026 race began to take shape.
Inter Europol Competition’s #43 ORECA 07-Gibson opened the day at 10:00, while Alpine Endurance Team’s #36 Alpine A424 completed Friday’s programme at 17:20. In between, major Hypercar manufacturers including BMW, Genesis, Peugeot, Aston Martin, Cadillac and Alpine all passed through Scrutineering, alongside a strong field of LMP2 and LMGT3 entries.
Inter Europol Competition sets the LMP2 tone
Inter Europol Competition was first through Scrutineering on Friday, bringing immediate attention to the LMP2 class. The Polish team arrived at Le Mans with a strong recent record and a clear sense of ambition after establishing itself as one of the category’s benchmark operations.
Kuba Śmiechowski, driver of the #43 ORECA 07-Gibson, underlined the team’s target.
“We are coming off three consecutive podium finishes. This year, we want to win again.”
His teammate Tom Dillmann also emphasised the scale of Le Mans and the demands of the LMP2 category.
“There is no race greater than the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I think we are still the favourites. Honestly, our car is performing very well here. In the LMP2 class, it comes down to merit. We all have the same package. So, it is up to the teams and drivers to make the difference. You have to be fast throughout the entire race.”
In a class where identical machinery places greater emphasis on execution, Inter Europol’s confidence made its intentions clear from the first moments of race week.
BMW arrives with Spa momentum
BMW M Team WRT was one of the major Hypercar attractions on Friday. The team arrived in Le Mans after victory at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, a result that gave BMW momentum ahead of the biggest race of the FIA World Endurance Championship season.
Kevin Magnussen said the team felt ready for the challenge, while recognising the unpredictability of Le Mans.
“We are well-prepared for the most important race of the year, one we need to win. Even so, it is impossible to single out a favourite for an event like this. Everyone has a chance. That said, we are definitely full of energy and hope after the race at Spa.”
BMW’s appearance at Scrutineering reinforced its status as one of the manufacturers to watch in a Hypercar field that appears exceptionally competitive.
Genesis makes its first Le Mans impression
One of the biggest moments of Scrutineering Day 1 was the arrival of Genesis Magma Racing and its GMR-001 Hypercars. The newcomer made its Le Mans debut in a striking orange livery, drawing major attention as the cars passed through place de la République.
For Genesis, the 2026 race represents a difficult first test against manufacturers with greater experience at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Three-time Le Mans winner André Lotterer explained the team’s approach.
“We know how challenging it is to make a breakthrough in the very first year of competition, especially against teams with so much experience. Our approach is quite simple: to focus on our performance while getting the most out of the car. Our goal is to reach the finish line and, in doing so, build a solid foundation for the future.”
The debut of Genesis added one of the most intriguing storylines of the opening day, with the team prioritising progress, reliability and experience in its first appearance at Le Mans.
Peugeot marks a century of Le Mans history
Peugeot’s Scrutineering appearance carried added historical weight, with the French manufacturer marking 100 years since its first start in the Le Mans classic. The brand returned to the city centre with the 9X8 and with the objective of turning recent progress into a stronger result at its home race.
Loïc Duval, driver of the #94 Peugeot 9X8, pointed to the importance of Test Day and the rare opportunity to run on the full Le Mans circuit.
“We want to optimise our package and achieve the best possible result. Test Day will be crucial. Our cars are designed to perform at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but outside of testing and the race itself, we never get to drive on the circuit.”
Malthe Jakobsen also highlighted both the motivation within the team and the level of competition across the FIA WEC field.
“This progress is a huge source of motivation for the entire team. I believe we have demonstrated real potential. That is possible when the group is united. At the same time, the start of the season has shown that the FIA WEC is a highly competitive championship where nothing comes easily. We need to get all the details right to turn our capabilities into results.”
For Peugeot, Friday’s Scrutineering appearance was not only a public start to race week, but also a reminder of the manufacturer’s long connection to Le Mans.
Aston Martin continues its push with the Valkyrie
The Aston Martin THOR Team brought one of the most distinctive cars of the Hypercar era to Scrutineering, as the Valkyrie appeared in front of the Le Mans crowd. Its naturally aspirated V12 has made it one of the most recognisable entries in the field, and the team arrived with increased expectations after a stronger run at Spa-Francorchamps.
Tom Gamble, driver of the #007 Aston Martin Valkyrie, said the programme had moved forward since its debut season.
“Last year, the goal was to finish the race, gather as much data as possible and learn. The car is becoming increasingly competitive. We are working tirelessly to improve it. The result at Spa is highly motivating ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We are hoping for a podium finish.”
After using its first Le Mans appearance to gather data and understand the event, Aston Martin now enters the 2026 race with a clearer competitive target.
Cadillac expects one of the closest races in Le Mans history
Cadillac was also among the most anticipated marques on Friday. Since entering the Hypercar class in 2023, the V-Series.R has built a strong following, aided by its naturally aspirated V8 and its presence near the front of the field.
The American manufacturer arrived at Le Mans after extensive winter development work and strong early-season performances. Will Stevens, driver of the #12 Cadillac, said that preparation had strengthened the team’s understanding of the car.
“We had a good preparation period. It allowed us to understand the car’s evolution. We delivered strong performances in the first two rounds of the season. That gives us confidence.”
Sébastien Bourdais, driver of the #38 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA entry, suggested that the 2026 edition could be particularly close.
“We hope to be able to fight for something bigger than Hyperpole. Our package should be competitive. I think this will be one of the closest races in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”
His comment captured the mood around the Hypercar field, where several manufacturers appear capable of fighting for victory.
Alpine closes the Hypercar proceedings
Alpine Endurance Team rounded out Friday’s Hypercar Scrutineering programme with its two A424s. The appearance came with added emotion after the manufacturer confirmed that its endurance racing programme will end at the close of the season.
Despite that backdrop, Alpine arrived at Le Mans with confidence and determination. Team Principal Philippe Sinault said the team had reached a new level of preparation.
“We have never been better prepared. We really understand the car. The team is mature. Since the start of the season, we have taken a step forward in both sporting and technical terms. As a result, we are capable of achieving great things in this 94th running. When you are Alpine and you take part in this race, you have to be determined.”
For Alpine, the 2026 race now carries the added dimension of legacy, with the A424 programme seeking a strong final Le Mans statement.
Doriane Pin returns with LMP2 podium ambitions
Doriane Pin was one of the notable LMP2 names to pass through Scrutineering on Friday. The 22-year-old is one of two female drivers set to start the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans and returns with Duqueine Team for her second appearance in the race.
Alongside Julien Andlauer and Richard Verschoor, Pin joins a team currently leading the LMP2 Pro/Am class in the European Le Mans Series after two rounds. She said the combination had reason to be confident.
“I am delighted to be back. I’m here with more endurance racing experience under my belt. The team is putting in a tremendous amount of work to get ready for the race. We have a real shot at a podium finish or even the win in LMP2. We have every reason to believe it’s possible.”
A podium or class victory for Pin would be one of the major stories of the 2026 edition.
LMGT3 delivers a strong manufacturer presence
The LMGT3 field also brought variety to Scrutineering Day 1, with Ferrari, Corvette, Aston Martin, Ford and Porsche all represented at place de la République.
Vista AF Corse’s #21 Ferrari 296 LMGT3 EVO arrived after finishing second last year, with François Hériau making clear that the team is targeting the top step this time.
“We finished second on the podium last year. Now, we want more. We are going to do everything we can to take the top spot. We are extremely well-prepared. I have been teaming up with Simon Mann and Alessio Rovera for three seasons now and we have developed a natural rapport and really enjoy our time together. Our team spirit will certainly be an asset.”
Ford’s return to the Le Mans GT story also drew attention, with Proton Competition entering two Mustang LMGT3s. Former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant is preparing for his first 24 Hours of Le Mans in the #88 car after contesting the Rolex 24 at Daytona earlier in the year.
“This will be my second 24-hour race, following the Rolex 24 at Daytona I competed in earlier this year. I hope our race goes well. It’s so exciting.”
Sargeant also referenced the preparation completed before the Mustang’s first Le Mans track running.
“We’ve done a lot of groundwork, particularly in the simulator. The car’s first run is coming up soon.”
Ben Tuck, driver of the #77 Ford Mustang LMGT3, said the true competitive picture would only become clear once running began.
“The car has evolved significantly over the past three years. It is very difficult to say whether we are favourites or challengers this week. Even after the Test Day, it is hard to establish a pecking order. We won’t truly know the competitive landscape until the first two or three laps of the race. We hope to be in the mix.”
With established GT manufacturers and ambitious private teams throughout the class, LMGT3 added another layer of anticipation to the opening day.

Scrutineering continues on Saturday
With 39 of the 62 entries checked, Scrutineering Day 1 delivered the first major public chapter of the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans. It brought together debutants, established contenders, returning manufacturers and ambitious private teams in the city centre before the track action begins.
Scrutineering continues on Saturday, 6 June, with the final 23 entrants scheduled for inspection. Ferrari AF Corse and Toyota Gazoo Racing are set to headline the remaining Hypercar appearances, while LMGT3 entries from Ferrari, Mercedes, Lexus, McLaren and BMW will also complete their checks.
Friday’s proceedings confirmed that Le Mans week is no longer approaching. It has begun. The race will be decided at the Circuit de la Sarthe, but the first emotions, first statements and first signs of intent came in the heart of the city.
Pit Debrief will be providing live updates throughout the race. Follow along via our live blog.
