Alex Dunne has announced the mutual decision between himself and McLaren to part ways effective immediately. The Irish Formula 2 driver joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme in the May of 2024. This announcement has come in the wake of junior team switch rumours.
Comments from Dunne himself
The Irish driver took to social media stating: “From today I’ve mutually decided to part ways with the McLaren Driver Development programme.” He continued on to thank each person at McLaren for helping him to grow as a driver. The Irishman also acknowledged the opportunities that have come to him through this programme. Dunne took part in the Austrian Grand Prix Free Practice 1 session earlier this year, finishing 4th overall and only 0.069s behind World Championship leader, Oscar Piastri.
“I’d like to thank every individual at McLaren that has helped me develop and improve as a driver, To have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car followed by two FP1 sessions is something I’ll always hold very close to my heart, I wish them all the best for the future. Thank you Papaya family”.
He concluded his social media announcement with a rather cryptic message, provoking fans to further speculate a switch to a rival Driver Development Programme. He stated: “Still two important rounds left to focus on this year, very excited for what’s to come”
McLaren’s announcement
While Dunne posted a rather heartfelt message, McLaren opted to keep it pleasant and concise. The team stated that their contract with Dunne had concluded, and that they wished him all the best.
“McLaren Racing has ended its contract with McLaren Driver Development Programme member Alex Dunne. It has been a pleasure to work with Alex over the last year and to have been able to contribute to his success and growth as a driver through the McLaren Driver Development programme. Alex will be released with immediate effect. We wish Alex all the best for his career going forward.”
