Alexander Abkhazava will take the next step in his single-seater career in 2026 by joining the Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) with MP Motorsport. Importantly, the 19-year-old remains with the same team as he transitions into a more competitive and demanding championship, signalling continuity in his development pathway.
Abkhazava heads into the new season following a mixed but valuable 2025 campaign in the Eurocup-3, where he finished 12th overall. Despite the result, the season provided crucial mileage and experience at a higher level.
However, his form improved significantly over the winter. Competing in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, he secured two race victories and finished third in the standings—an encouraging sign ahead of his European campaign.
Strong foundations builds strong momentum for Abkhazava heading into 2026 FREC campaign with MP Motorsport
Before stepping into cars, Abkhazava built a solid reputation in karting. Notably, he claimed the Rotax Junior title at the Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy in 2019, marking his first major international success.
He continued to deliver consistent performances as he progressed into the senior ranks, establishing himself as a reliable competitor before making the move to single-seaters.
In 2023, Abkhazava made his car racing debut in the Formula 4 UAE Championship with R-ace GP. Although results proved challenging, the season provided essential experience in highly competitive fields.
He later contested the F4 Spanish Championship with Drivex, continuing his learning curve in European racing.
A step up to Formula Regional machinery in 2024 marked a turning point. Racing in the Middle East series with Pinnacle Motorsport, Abkhazava showed clear progress, including a fourth-place finish at Yas Marina Circuit.
He then joined Saintéloc Racing for the Eurocup-3 season, where he made an immediate impact. Impressively, he finished second on debut at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and later secured his first victory at Algarve International Circuit.
Although his momentum dipped in the latter half of the season, he still secured a top-10 championship finish and gained valuable experience, including an appearance at the prestigious Macau event.
Now, with additional experience under his belt and strong winter form, Abkhazava enters 2026 with renewed confidence. Staying with MP Motorsport provides stability as he adapts to the demands of the Formula Regional European Championship.
Therefore, this move represents both a challenge and an opportunity. If he can carry his Middle East performance into Europe, Abkhazava could emerge as a driver to watch as the season unfolds.
