Kimi Antonelli had a positive qualifying session ahead of the F1 Mexico City GP. In fact, the young Italian driver managed to snatch a great P6 in spite of early qualifying issues.

In all the Qualifying segments the Italian driver featured in the final moments in the bottom five, only making it into Q2 by a very fine margin in P15.

Ultimately the rookie managed to secure a great starting spot, recovering from a difficult race in Austin.

Antonelli discussed his Qualifying ahead of the F1 Mexico City GP, identifying his weak areas and looking for time to be found.

“I think there was a little bit more. Yeah, a really scrappy Q1, just couldn’t find my rhythm and it was a bit all rushed, you know. Q2 and then Q3 were finally cleaner sessions.”

A strong run

Antonelli was pleased to have a positive end to a tougher day, with less than half a second gap to the pole sitter Norris, he didn’t feel like he had left too much on track.

“But, yeah, just, you know, I just did a good enough job at the start of the session and then put me in more of an unfavourable position. So, yeah, just a shame. But still, P6, close to P3. So, you know, tomorrow we can put on a fight.”

Asked on his sensations ahead of the full length race, the Mercedes driver was rather feeling positive and looking for a chance to improve his starting position.

Looking forward to a chance of points

“I think, you know, it’s going to be a bit of unknown, but, all three compounds look very valuable for the race. So, let’s see, you know. The start is going to be very important and hopefully, you know, from there we can gain a few places and then fight for the front.”

Antonelli, out of the points in the latest F1 US GP, will be looking forward to a chance to score a third top five finish in the last four races.
