Kobe Pauwels will make his debut in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the season-opening 6 Hours of Imola. The Aston Martin Academy graduate steps in for Eduardo Barrichello, who faces a scheduling clash with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
As a result, Pauwels receives an early opportunity to showcase his talent on endurance racing’s biggest stage.
2026 WEC debut a reward for strong GT performances by Pauwels
Pauwels’ promotion follows an impressive rise through GT racing ranks. The 21-year-old enjoyed a standout second season in the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS, where he secured the Sprint Cup Silver title with Comtoyou Racing.
Previously, he also built his reputation as a rallycross champion before transitioning successfully into circuit racing. Consequently, his adaptability and consistent performances have marked him as one of Aston Martin’s most promising young drivers.
At Imola, Pauwels will join Jonny Adam and Gray Newell in the No. 23 entry run by Heart of Racing Team. The trio will compete in the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo, aiming to deliver a competitive performance in the LMGT3 category.
Meanwhile, Barrichello will race for the same team in IMSA at Long Beach, sharing driving duties with Spencer Pumpelly. Therefore, both programmes continue in parallel despite the clash.
Pauwels acknowledged that his WEC debut has come sooner than anticipated, but he remains focused on proving himself.
“The WEC debut is very exciting and, if I’m honest, has come earlier than I expected it would,” admitted Pauwels, who is due to be contesting the full season of GTWC Europe in a Comtoyou Aston as his main program. “I will do my best to show the Heart of Racing Team and Aston Martin that I was the right choice.”
Thus, the Belgian approaches the opportunity with both enthusiasm and determination.
Future opportunities remain open
Another calendar clash between WEC and IMSA later in the season could present Pauwels with further opportunities. However, no confirmation has yet been made regarding a potential appearance at Interlagos in July.
In addition, Aston Martin has announced a 22-driver shortlist for its Academy programme. These candidates will be evaluated throughout the season, with one earning factory backing for 2027.
Therefore, Pauwels’ debut not only marks a milestone in his career but also highlights the pathway available to emerging talent within Aston Martin’s development system.
