After the opening practice sessions of the Singapore GP weekend, both Aston Martin drivers are feeling very positive.
On the back of two consecutive weekends without scoring points for the team, both drivers reflected on the first day of practice and shared their hopes for a strong result this weekend.
Alonso: “able to find the limits quickly”
Fernando Alonso topped the timings of FP1 and finished fourth in FP2 for the Singapore GP. He reacted positively to the current set-up compared to that of Monza and Baku, but still emphasised that there is performance to be found.
“Seems a little bit better than the previous Grand Prix. Let’s try to yeah fine-tune the setup. Still not in a happy place, especially on the front axle, still a little bit too much understeer. Something to work tonight but I think, a good start. Let’s see what we can do tomorrow.”
Though happy with the weekend so far, the Spanish driver remained skeptical about the top teams not yet revealing their full potential due to the red flag interruption of FP2.
“Since the first lap in FP1 we were in a comfy place and we were able to find the limits quite quickly already in FP1, now in FP2. Obviously, the red flag didn’t help to see the full picture so I don’t know the top teams if they put the lap or not together with the red flag. Let’s see if we can be in Q3 tomorrow in points on Sunday.”
Stroll pleased with progress
Lance Stroll shared the same optimism as his Aston Martin teammate for a strong Singapore GP. The Canadian noted his improvement across the two sessions, moving from 18th in FP1 to 6th in FP2.
“Some good laps today, we learnt a lot. I think we improved the car from the beginning of the day till the end of the day, so that was good. See what we can do tomorrow.
It’s very different for sure. The temperature dropping, the sun coming down, it was a very different track in FP2 but I had a good feeling in the car. We were competitive in that session so we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”
