The Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team has moved swiftly to shut down mounting speculation surrounding the role of Adrian Newey, after reports suggested an imminent leadership reshuffle, particularly that of team principal, at the Silverstone-based squad.

At the centre of the rumours, claims emerged that Newey—widely regarded as Formula 1’s most successful designer—would step back from a team principal-style position to focus exclusively on technical matters. Furthermore, reports by Autosport/Motorsport linked Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Audi, as a potential replacement. These claims gained traction when the Audi Formula 1 project confirmed Wheatley’s departure, citing personal reasons and a return to the UK.

However, via a press release from Aston Martin, Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll has now issued a firm statement to counter the narrative. Instead of signalling change, he emphasised continuity, partnership, and a deliberate departure from traditional Formula 1 leadership models.

Crucially, Stroll underlined that Aston Martin does not operate with a conventional team principal structure. Rather, Newey continues as Managing Technical Partner within a broader, collaborative leadership system. As a result, what may appear externally as instability reflects an intentional distribution of responsibility.

Meanwhile, the timing of the rumours remains significant. Aston Martin has endured a difficult start to the 2026 season, with reliability concerns linked to its new Honda power unit preventing the AMR26 from completing race distances.

Despite this, Stroll’s message remains clear: Aston Martin aims to project stability, reinforce Newey’s authority, and present its leadership structure as purposeful rather than reactive.

Statement by Lawrence Stroll on the role of Adrian Newey at Aston Martin F1 Team

“With the current speculation surrounding Adrian Newey’s role in our team, I want to take this opportunity to set the record straight.

As Executive Chairman and Controlling Shareholder, I would like to reaffirm that Adrian Newey is my partner and an important shareholder. He is AMR’s Managing Technical Partner, and he and I have a true partnership built on a shared vision of success for the company.

We do things differently here, and while we don’t currently adopt the traditional Team Principal role that you see elsewhere – it is by design.

As the most successful engineer in the history of the sport, Adrian’s primary focus is on the strategic and technical leadership where he excels. He is supported by a highly skilled Senior Leadership Team to deliver on all aspects of the business, both at the Campus and trackside.

We are regularly approached by senior executives of other teams who wish to join Aston Martin Aramco, but in keeping with our policy, we do not comment on rumour and speculation.”
