Doriane Pin leads the Drivers’ Standings going into the F1 Academy season finale in Las Vegas after an intense battle with Maya Weug at the Singapore GP. The PREMA Racing driver holds a 151-point lead, with her rival Weug just nine points behind on 142.
Singapore battle in the rain
The weekend began with a close Qualifying session where Pin narrowly missed out on pole position by just 0.042 seconds, as Weug claimed the top spot. Despite that, Pin had a strong getaway at the start of Race 2, snatching the lead into Turn 1.
“The job that we had to do was to pass at Turn 1 – we passed at Turn 1,” Pin reflected after the race. “We did the full job there.”
Her pace in the opening laps was strong, building an advantage until the weather turned. Rain fell mid-race, and a Safety Car was deployed after Nicole Havrda crashed in the slippery conditions, neutralising the race. Pin and Weug stayed on slick tyres rather than wets to maintain track position, setting up a tense restart.
Weug strikes on the final lap
Pin managed to restart well and continued to hold firm under pressure. However, on lap 14, Weug launched a decisive in the wet, overtaking the French driver to claim victory. Afterwards, Pin expressed both pride and disappointment with the outcome.
“Obviously we had a really strong gap until the Safety Car. Even when it was raining mid-race, in Sector 2 we were very competitive. It was pretty exciting as well because in the rain when you have slick tyres, it’s a good feeling because you drive at your best and you manage the conditions and you have to adapt every lap because there is more or less rain.”
She continued, “The Safety Car came in and the last lap was not good at all. It was pretty disappointing. It was full rain so on slick tyres on the street track with water that stays on the surface, with the white line crossing the track… it was very slippery for everyone. We missed out on the victory today.”
Title fight in the season finale
Despite a narrow defeat, Pin remains in control of the F1 Academy championship as the 2025 title heads to Las Vegas. Confident but grounded, she summed up her mindset: “We are leading the series so that means we are the best ones, right? We keep it going until the end.”
The stage is now set for a thrilling championship decided on the streets of Las Vegas, with just nine points separating Pin and Weug.
