The 2025 Monza F2 Sprint Race at the Italian GP delivered a dramatic spectacle on track, and the stewards quickly followed with decisive penalties. They handed out multiple post-race penalties that not only reshaped the classification but also carried significant consequences for several drivers and one team.

Alexander Dunne penalised after contact with Kush Maini

Rodin Motorsport’s Alexander Dunne caused the first major penalty incident. On Lap 1 at Turn 3, he exited Turn 2 ahead of Kush Maini (Car 12, DAMS Lucas Oil) and then gradually drifted towards the racing line. Meanwhile, Maini carried more speed on the outside and attempted an overtake. However, Dunne forced him off the circuit, and contact immediately eliminated Maini from the race.

Because Dunne forced another driver off track, the stewards ruled that he had breached Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(b) of the FIA International Sporting Code. Although the rules entitled him to choose his racing line, he exceeded fair racing limits. Furthermore, the stewards identified no mitigating circumstances, since no other cars influenced the situation. Consequently, they imposed the standard 10-second time penalty.

This sanction dropped Dunne from a provisional P11 to P13 in the final classification. In addition, the stewards issued two penalty points, which increased his season total to 10.

Sami Meguetounif penalised for clash with Dunne

Later in the race, Trident’s Sami Meguetounif committed another costly infringement. On Lap 9 at Turn 2, Dunne overtook Car 22, and Meguetounif responded by running wide, cutting across Turn 2, and losing control as he rejoined. In doing so, he collided with Dunne and forced both cars off the track.

Because Meguetounif caused the incident, the stewards deemed him wholly responsible. They cited Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(d) of the ISC and handed him a five-second time penalty. Since he retired from the Sprint Race, this sanction converted into a three-place grid drop for the next race—the Monza Feature Race.

Moreover, the stewards added one penalty point to his licence, bringing his 2025 total to two.

Dino Beganovic sanctioned for VSC infringement

Hitech TGR’s Dino Beganovic also received a penalty, this time for a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) infringement. Data showed that he exceeded the minimum delta time by 1.3 seconds at the end of the VSC period, thus breaching Article 41.5 of the FIA F2 Sporting Regulations.

As a result, the stewards imposed the standard five-second time penalty, which dropped Beganovic from P5 to P6 in the final order. They also issued one penalty point, marking his first of the season.

MP Motorsport fined €500

The stewards did not limit their decisions to drivers. They also fined MP Motorsport after an unsafe incident during an unscheduled pit stop for Car 5. In their haste to service the car, a mechanic dropped a spare wheel gun with a wheel nut attached, and the nut rolled into the Fast Lane. Although another team member retrieved it quickly, the incident represented a breach of Article 28.14 of the FIA F2 Sporting Regulations.

Because this situation created a potential danger to both drivers and pit crew, the stewards imposed a €500 fine, payable within 48 hours.
