19th in Pit Debrief’s Driver Rankings for the 2025 F1 season is Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll. It was another extremely underwhelming year for the Canadian driver.
A great start to the season for Lance Stroll
As the 2025 F1 season started, Aston Martin struggled for pace. However, in a chaotic Australian GP, great tyre calls from driver and team saw Lance Stroll finish P6 in mixed conditions. Multiple disqualifications in China gave him P9, leaving him on 10 points two rounds in.
Mixed conditons at Silverstone leads to strong results in the early part of the second half of 2025
Just like at Albert Park, great tyre calls from Lance Stroll and Aston Martin led to a good P7 result. A lack of car pace as the track dried out saw him drop from P3, however.
P7 in Hungary and an outstanding drive to 7th in The Netherlands following a qualifying crash added 12 more points to his total. A long second stint on the hards at Zandvoort was rewarded by a Safety Car at the perfect moment.
A good finish in Abu Dhabi
Following a run of no points scored in 8 consecutive rounds, the Canadian driver finished the season with a P10 in Abu Dhabi. Brilliant moves and pace at the end on the mediums saw him charge through from P17 to P9 on the road. Despite a penalty, he got one point in the end.
It shows when Lance Stroll has a good day, he can be competitive and fast.
Nowhere near good enough in qualifying
Formula 1 qualifying has never been closer than it was in 2025. Even a tenth between teammates could lead to differences of 5-6 places on the grid, the odd time even more than that.
However, Lance Stroll was very poor in on a Saturday in 2025. He did not beat Fernando Alonso in a single Grand Prix qualifying session. In fact, the last time he did was Silverstone in July of 2024.
Out of all the drivers who started every round this year, and even including Franco Colapinto, the driver of car #18 had the most Q1 exits in 2025 with 14. His teammate only dropped out in the first segment three times. Regarding Q3 appearances, it’s 2-13 against the two-time World Champion for the 28-year-old.
In points he lost out 33-56. Overall Fernando Alonso has outscored Lance Stroll by 201 points across their three seasons together so far.
The cycle of mediocrity continues and will not be stopping soon
2026 will mark a tenth season in Formula 1 for the Canadian driver. Everything is known about him now. The reality is he is not good enough to be a World Champion or a consistent race winner, should he ever win a Grand Prix.
While he can be very strong in races with mixed conditions, have the odd excellent showing in a dry Grand Prix, his overall level is extremely average. Anonymous weekends for most of the year are a part of the course for Stroll. Fernando Alonso has destroyed him since the two-time World Champion joined Aston Martin in 2023.
Barring a sudden change of heart by his father, Stroll will remain on the grid for plenty of years to come. The reality is a number of other drivers not even in F1 right now would push Alonso harder. Talent is not the reason he is hanging around.
This is why Lance Stroll is 19th in Pit Debrief’s Driver Rankings for the 2025 F1 season.
