Sitting at P9 in the 2025 F2 Championship standings, is the son of F1 legend, Juan Pablo Montoya; Sebastian Montoya. The 20-year-old Colombian is just ahead of his PREMA Racing teammate, creating this lead largely over the recent two rounds.

Since moving up to the F2 Championship full-time in 2023, Montoya has driven for two other teams, before joining PREMA Racing for the 2025 season. Paired with Italy’s Gabriele Mini, they have put in a combined effort to take PREMA to just P7 in the standings.

Round 1 in Melbourne

Melbourne’s qualifying session was tough for the Colombian, meeting with the turn 3 gravel, ultimately qualifying in P11. In a fortunate fight for Montoya, the Sprint Race saw him climb to P6. Unfortunately, a rainy Sunday in Melbourne meant the F2 Feature Race was cancelled.

Round 2 in Bahrain

The qualifying session in Bahrain caught many drivers out for track limits violations — Montoya was one of those drives. This meant he was only capable of qualifying P18. There was action off the start of the Sprint Race, Montoya spinning into the gravel, resulting in a DNF. Fortunately for the Colombian, he finished the Feature Race just a position lower than he started; P19.

Round 3 in Saudi Arabia

Practice in Saudi Arabia resulted in a disqualification for Montoya after being found to be overweight. His qualifying P17 during the Jeddah F2 Qualifying, was a positive revival to his weekend. An early Virtual Safety Car during the Sprint Race barely affected the Colombian, who climbed to a P13 finish.

The Feature Race furthered the misfortune of Montoya’s weekend in Saudi Arabia, when his race ended in a DNF.

Round 4 in Imola

A red flag in the Imola F2 qualifying session did not phase Montoya, rather allowed him to qualified P2. Starting the Sprint Race from P9, the Colombian managed to hold position and finish in P9. Misfortune appeared in the Feature Race, after early incidents and a Safety Car, ultimately led to a P8 finish for Montoya.

Round 5 in Monaco

Taking part in the Group B qualifying session in Monaco, Montoya managed a group P3, and an overall P5. Montoya started the Sprint Race P6, and after early incidents managed to hold position for a P6 finish. Absolute carnage occurred through Sainte Devote from the start of the Feature Race, Montoya thankfully continuing on, despite 7 DNFs due to this accident.

He managed to avoid this chaos after stalling at the beginning of the formation lap, and starting from the pit lane. This misfortune turned quickly into great fortune for the Colombian. After a massive 9 DNFs, and a last-minute penalty for Arvid Lindblad, Montoya was promoted from P4, to the final step of the podium.

Round 6 in Spain

In a largely care free qualifying session in Spain, Montoya recorded yet another P2 in Qualifying. The Sprint Race took a dramatic turn when Montoya came together with his teammate Mini, forcing Mini into a DNF, while the Colombian continued on. An incredible recovery drive saw him finishing in P5. Despite safety car interventions in the Feature Race, Montoya held on to P2, taking the second step of the podium.

An overview

Montoya’s largest point scores came in Round 6 in Imola, taking home a total of 18 points, although Monaco showed great results with 11 points added to his name. After just six rounds of the season, Montoya has already fought his way up to P9 in the standings, P8 just 5 points ahead.

Should Montoya continue to show pace and performance for PREMA Racing, there is every chance both he and the team may finish in the top 5 of their respective championships.
