The Formula 2 Championship is headed to Spa-Francorchamps for Round 9 of the season. With the title fight being at its height, every point counts for the current top five. Only 24 points separate Richard Verschoor in first and Luke Browning in fifth. With only two races left before the summer break, Spa is forecasted to be a wet encounter, after Silverstone.
From the championship fight in 2024 to the championship fight in the current Formula 2 season at the Belgian GP
As the 2025 Belgian GP weekend nears, the 2024 Formula 2 showdown still echoes. Paul Aron, Isack Hadjar, and Gabriel Bortoleto fought hard in both Qualifying and the Feature Race. Hadjar snatched the win with a bold and dramatic drive. The result shook up the title fight with just six rounds left.
Richard Verschoor currently leads the standings on 122 points. Jak Crawford chases him closely, only two points behind. He carries momentum from a Silverstone win and a podium at Spa the year before. Alexander Dunne and Leonardo Fornaroli both claimed victories earlier in the season and push to stay in the hunt. Luke Browning holds fifth, well, attainable the lead. All five drivers have a real shot at taking control.
Will the championship fight be shaken up?
If the next group of challengers has their say, they’ll hope none of the top five in the Formula 2 standings leave the Belgian GP with the upper hand. Arvid Lindblad, Sebastián Montoya, Pepe Martí, Victor Martins, and Dino Beganovic have all shown serious pace in 2025, but currently sit sixth to tenth in the standings. Campos Racing teammates Lindblad and Martí each have two wins this season. Montoya has climbed the podium in three of the last four rounds.
Martins has qualified in the top three in seven of eight weekends so far. Beganovic has one pole and two podiums to his name. All five want strong results at Spa and Budapest to launch a serious title push before the summer break. They’ve each proven their speed, but results haven’t always matched. Now, Spa gives them a vital chance to close the gap and shake up the championship fight.
Who will conquer the rain?
Rain looks set to play a major role in this weekend’s Formula 2 action at the Belgian GP, with forecasts showing a high chance of wet conditions on all three days. That means drivers could face rain in Free Practice, Qualifying, and both races. Friday will be crucial. The field will need to adapt quickly in Practice to deliver when it matters in Qualifying.
Overtaking in the wet is always tricky. Silverstone’s Feature Race proved it can be done—if the car is set up right and the driver has confidence. But Spa brings its own challenge. Last year’s wet Sprint Race showed how tough it can be to make moves, even for the quickest drivers. Track position will be vital, putting huge pressure on Friday’s Qualifying session.
Several drivers and teams in the Formula 2 paddock have already delivered strong results in wet weather this season, and they’ll be confident of doing it again. It won’t be easy, but the stakes are high. We’ll soon find out who handles the conditions best—and who will reign supreme in Formula 2 at Spa.
