It’s time to get on track for the second Formula E FP2 practice session of the weekend in Madrid. In the earlier FP1 session, Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum had taken the top spot in a quiet session.
Formula E FP2 in Madrid begins!
All the drivers take the track as the flag goes green! The track is pretty damp, with a slight fog around as well.
Latest race winner Antonio Felix da Costa sets the early benchmark of the session.
Andretti’s Jake Dennis goes wide off track into the gravel trap, as current champion Oliver Rowland signs the first lap in the 1:44s.
Drivers begin to sign the first full power laps, with the Porsche duo impressing. In fact Wehrlein set a 1:41.099 and Mueller took second, only slightly behind in 0.747s.
Recovering from yesterday’s last place in FP1, Nissan’s Nato had a big snap.
Halfway through the session, Da Costa holds firmly again the P1 from Wehrlein and Maloney.
Lola Yamaha’s Di Grassi became only the latest driver to run wide off track into the gravel trap, as the drivers struggle to adapt to the new track layout in moist conditions.
A driver who is having an hard time adapting to the peculiar track conditions is Vergne, who sits in P20 and has pitted to try and make setup changes.
Challenging weather conditions
Mahindra’s Nyck de Vries had a mid corner lack of feeling as well, before going on top with an impressive 1:38s.
A moment replayed from yesterday. In fact Dan Ticktum went again into the gravel trap then went on top.
Times are consistently lowering as track evolution comes into play in the final moments of the session. Mahindra’s De Vries crushed Ticktum’s previous effort due to the combination of better speed exiting the hairpin and lack of mistake.
In the final moments of the session the podium completely changed. Nissan’s Nato settled into third, Andretti’s Drugovich took the lead with the overall best lap whilst not setting any top session. Finally, Vergne moved up from last to P2, improving his lap time by over 4 seconds.
