Formula E and the FIA have signed a landmark 10-year extension, ensuring the all-electric single-seater championship continues as the exclusive FIA World Championship in its category. The new deal reinforces Formula E’s position at the forefront of global motorsport and paves the way for ambitious growth and technological innovation.
The agreement, announced today, cements a long-term partnership between the FIA and Formula E Holdings Limited—majority owned by Liberty Global—and reflects a shared commitment to sustainable racing, cutting-edge technology, and broadening access to motorsport.
Securing the future of electric motorsport
The extension ensures Formula E remains the only fully electric single-seater championship under the FIA banner. It provides the stability and strategic vision necessary to continue the series’ expansion and evolution—on track and beyond. The championship plans to accelerate the development of its racing cars with greater top speeds, improved aerodynamics, and superior tyre performance, all while preserving its commitment to sustainability and competitive racing.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated: “The extension of the agreement governing the FIA Formula E World Championship is a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to foster long-term stability, innovation, and growth across all areas of motorsport.”
This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological progress, which are all central to the Championship’s unique identity and purpose. It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all. We are delighted to be continuing this journey with Formula E, and I look forward to seeing it grow even further, both on and off the track, in the years to come.”
A championship driving global impact
Formula E has rapidly evolved into one of the most exciting series in world motorsport. Since its inaugural race in Beijing in 2014, it has reached nearly 400 million fans and draws a television audience approaching half a billion. The championship features 11 teams and 22 drivers competing in iconic cities such as Monaco, Tokyo, Shanghai, and London.
The latest evolution of the series, the GEN3 Evo, debuted earlier this season and represents a significant leap in performance. With a 0-60mph time of just 1.82 seconds—30% quicker than a current Formula 1 car—and a 200mph top speed, the car demonstrates the power of electric innovation. The car regenerates nearly half of the energy required to complete a race, and its construction prioritises sustainability with 35% recycled materials in the tyres and recycled carbon fibre and natural fibres in the bodywork.
Craig Edmondson, Chief Commercial Officer at the FIA, said: “Formula E has not only demonstrated impressive growth since its inception, but has also led the way on sustainable innovation in our industry. This is a landmark agreement for the FIA and Formula E, and we are excited to be working with the Championship in the years to come.”
Manufacturer commitment and global relevance
Formula E’s competitive field includes global automotive brands such as Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Maserati, Stellantis, Mahindra, and Lola-Yamaha. These partnerships strengthen the connection between motorsport innovation and consumer electric vehicles, driving a meaningful ‘race to road’ technology transfer.
The agreement arrives at a pivotal time for the EV sector. With electric vehicles projected to make up over 40% of global vehicle sales by 2030 and lithium-ion battery production expected to triple, Formula E offers a crucial platform to test, refine, and showcase future technologies.
Mike Fries, CEO at Liberty Global, said: “We’ve believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it’s headed. This is the motorsport of the future – a championship that combines the very latest technology, close-combat racing, and a mission that really matters.”
With the FIA’s continued backing, we can now take the next big steps – scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve. With this new agreement in place, Formula E is now positioned better than ever to define the future of motorsport – more innovative, more inclusive, more sustainable – and to inspire the next generation of fans, drivers, and partners around the world.”
Building a better future through motorsport
Formula E’s focus on sustainability has placed it at the top of the global sports ESG rankings for three consecutive years. The series continues to reduce its freight emissions and invest in legacy projects through the Better Future Fund, creating long-term value in host cities.
Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said: “Formula E’s growth since its inception has been nothing short of extraordinary, with hundreds of millions of fans and world-class teams and drivers deciding to choose highly competitive electric racing.
This long-term extension of the partnership enables us to continue building the brand, investing in the product and delivering some of the most captivating racing that has made us famous. With this long-term extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational.”
With the FIA’s endorsement and Liberty Global’s backing, Formula E now stands poised to lead the next decade of motorsport—delivering high-performance racing, advancing sustainable technology, and inspiring a new generation of electric racing enthusiasts worldwide.
