The first race day of the 2025/26 Formula E season is here, and after technical issues with radio communications forced the cancellation of the São Paulo E-Prix FP1, the cars finally hit the track for the first time in an extended one-hour FP2 session.
And with that, it’s time for the 2025 Google Cloud São Paulo E-Prix and our first glimpse of what Season 12 had to offer.
FP2 underway
With the green light displayed, previous São Paulo E-Prix winner, Mitch Evans, was first to hit the São Paulo Street Circuit. All other drivers followed, eager to hit the track for the first time since Valencia pre-season testing. Ten minutes into the session, Jake Dennis sits at the top of the timesheets with a 1:13.19.
Drivers from Nissan, Jaguar TCS, Porsche, and Andretti took turns topping the timesheets until Mahindra Racing’s Nyck De Vries and Edoardo Mortara took 1-2. During Valencia pre-season testing, Mahindra impressed with Mortara topping two sessions.
Meanwhile, Jean-Éric Vergne, who joined the new Citroën Racing team, jumped into P2 with a 1:12.38, splitting the Mahindra teammates.
Halfway through
With 35 minutes to go, drivers made their way to the pits while Evans went fastest with a 1:10.55. There was a brief yellow flag for home hero Lucas Di Grassi, who slowly peeled into the pits with an issue on his Lola Yamaha ABT. The Brazilian has had a tough session so far, sitting last on the timesheets.
Times continued to improve, with reigning world champion Oliver Rowland setting a quicker time than Evans by 0.249 seconds. However, this didn’t last long, as soon after, both Mahindras returned to the top, reclaiming a 1-2 with 20 minutes left.
Drivers began running full-power laps, with the time gaps closing down as Dan Ticktum went to 3rd.
Final moments
Going into the final minutes of FP2, De Vries and Mortara sit at the top, while rookie Pepe Martí started a lap as the only car on track, trying to improve from last place. With six minutes to go, Martí’s teammate Ticktum moved to first, going 0.135 seconds quicker than De Vries.
However, De Vries soon reclaimed first before Pascal Wehrlein went even faster in his Porsche to secure the top spot as the chequered flag came out.
