Pierre Gasly delivered a superb performance at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP, matching his seventh-place qualifying effort with a mirrored result in the race. Driving for Alpine, the Frenchman successfully held his position and finished as the lead driver behind the top three teams.

In the print media pen, Gasly described the weekend as nearly perfect, noting that the seventh place was the maximum result possible given the current pace of the front-runners.

It follows on from a P6 in Shanghai. For a second race in a row, Alpine had the best midfield pace, this time they finished as the lead runner in that group.

Gasly on managing the pressure at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP

Pierre Gasly highlighted the significant progress Alpine has made. He pointed out that finishing only seven seconds behind Lewis Hamilton in P6 is a very positive sign for the team’s development.

The Frenchman emphasised that the car was much faster than any of the other ones in the midfield, eventually crossing the line 18 seconds ahead of Liam Lawson in P9.

“I think it’s the perfect weekend really because 7th in Quali is definitely the best position we could get and in the race was the same, the top 6 was out of reach. But at the same time we finished only 7 seconds behind Lewis, which for me is a very positive sign. And then 18 seconds in front of Liam, who was in 9th.”

The race required high levels of concentration, particularly during a long battle with Max Verstappen at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP following the Safety Car. He explained that the pressure was constant, as the Dutchman never stopped pushing and probing.

However, he managed to maintain his position and credited the result to smart battery management and the car’s strength in specific areas of the track.

Even with a mid-race Safety Car due a crash from Ollie Bearman that reduced his lead to Verstappen, the Alpine driver remained in control. Gasly admitted that while the battle was hard, he enjoyed the extra pressure that comes with fighting a four-time World Champion.

“So we were clearly more on the better train, on the better group. And then, as we said, it was a pretty intense race. We all know Max is never giving up and for 28 laps he was just putting a lot of pressure. We were strong in different parts of the lap.

“So yeah, it just made my life not too easy every single lap. Coming into 16, making sure in Turn 1, checking the gaps after the first sector, Turn 11 he was pretty strong.

“I had to play a bit and be smart with my battery whenever I could see he was getting close. I think overall we managed it very well but it was definitely pretty intense.

“Yeah, I mean it’s not every single weekend I have the chance to fight with a 4-time world champion. And I’m glad to be in a position to do it with him.

“So I think I definitely enjoyed the race. It was just, you know, with that extra pressure there is more at stake, who you’re fighting against. And I also get the best out of myself in this type of moment. I’m very pleased.

“The pace was good. I would say we were a lot faster than any other cars in the midfield. Good start. P7. The safety car didn’t even really play in our favour because I had a bit of a 3-4 seconds [advantage] on Max. But yeah, it just made it more exciting.”

Alpine building momentum for the upcoming break

The weekend at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP provides a boost for the entire team, showing that the car is competitive on different types of circuits. This is a notable change from previous seasons and gives the factory staff a clear direction for future development. Last year they finished dead last in the Constructors’ Championship.

While Gasly’s teammate, Franco Colapinto, finished in P16, the performance of the 2020 Italian GP winner showed what the car is capable of when everything comes together.

The team now looks toward the upcoming break with confidence. The focus remains on closing the gap to the front of the grid through steady progress and consistent execution on race day.

“No, I think it’s in the progress. I think to me it’s really like it’s not going to happen over the course of the month. But I’d like to see ourselves after this time of break.

“We know what we’ve got to do, which is good. We know we don’t need to care about the car. We need to get the best out there. We need to just focus on our task here and what we’re doing.I think we’ve got good factors. Just gotta make it better.

“Yeah, I mean, I was 7th in Quali. Again, best behind the top three. In the race we had the pace again to be behind the top three this weekend. Again, we managed to do it, even though it was a bit harder to start on Friday.

“But I’m just happy because the car seems to work on all types of tracks, really. I think that’s definitely a good boost of confidence. I haven’t been at the factory yet, but hopefully they’ll enjoy seeing us fighting for this kind of position. It’s quite different to last year. Hopefully it gives us a boost to get the work done and get ourselves in an even better shape in the coming races.”

After the 2026 F1 Japanese GP, Pierre Gasly sits 8th in the Drivers’ Championship, with Alpine P5 on the Constructors’ side.
