Oliver Rowland has crowned himself as the new champion of Formula E at the Berlin E-Prix. The 32-year-old managed to clinch the title before the final round of the season in London.
Rowland dominated throughout Season 11
Going into the weekend at Berlin, Rowland had a commanding lead of 69 points to now-former reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein in the Porsche. Over the past 12 rounds, the Briton build that gap through consistency that was broken by short-term struggles. Rowland showed exceptional pace, while Nissan’s strategy calls pushed him up the field.
He had a strong weekend in São Paulo, but a penalty left him without points. The Nissan driver recovered those points in Mexico started. In Jeddah, Rowland was in the lead of the championship. The weekend in Nissan’s home Tokyo was nearly perfect with two wins, but Maserati’s Stoffel Vandoorne stopped him in the first race. In the past two races, Rowland only scored one point, after a penalty and weather struggles.
In Berlin, he had a DNF in Race 1, as he crashed into Vandoorne in the wet conditions. Race 2 was a fight to the top and Rowland did so after a grid drop. As Wehrlein wasn’t able to score points, so a P4 finish was enough to win the championship.
With the weekend in the German capital now over, Rowland will arrive as the Formula E champion to his home race in London.
The career of Rowland to Formula E
Rowland’s early years in karting laid the groundwork for a decorated junior formula career. After winning the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 2011, he made waves in Formula Renault. He clinched the Winter Series title and finished runner-up in the UK championship, before dominating the 2015 Formula Renault 3.5 Series. That year, Rowland took eight victories—a series record—and secured the championship before the final round.
His performances earned him opportunities in GP2 and later in FIA Formula 2, where he raced with DAMS in 2017 and consistently challenged front-runners. Although he never captured the F2 crown, Rowland’s pace and technical feedback attracted attention, leading to a debut Formula E seat with Nissan e.dams for the 2018–19 season. He already had one race for Mahindra under his belt from Season 2.
In his first year as a full-time driver, Rowland claimed three pole positions and finished tenth in the standings, showing immediate promise. Since then, he’s grown into a fierce competitor in the all-electric championship. Apart from a stint at Mahindra, Rowland always drove for the Nissan Formula E team. And now he achieved the deserved title with that very team.
