Nico Hülkenberg finished P11 at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP, just missing out on points after a poor start compromised his race. The Audi driver admitted he could have scored from his P13 starting position with a normal launch at Suzuka.

Kimi Antonelli won the race for Mercedes ahead of Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. Esteban Ocon claimed the final points position in 10th for Haas, leaving Hülkenberg just outside it. The German driver expressed frustration with both the start issue and the unpredictable nature of racing with significant energy deployment differences.

Poor start ruins points opportunity at the 2026 F1 Japanese GP

Speaking in the print media pen after the race, Nico Hülkenberg immediately identified the start as the critical moment during his 2026 F1 Japanese GP race. A solid launch would have positioned him to score points.

Instead, he dropped to P19 from 13th on the grid. It left Hülkenberg with too much ground to recover. He lost valuable track position that proved difficult to regain across the 53-lap race.

“Yeah, I think without, well, with a normal, regular start, there’s obviously points on the table, which is, yeah, disappointing and frustrating. So, yeah, we need to get on top of that. You know, it’s work in progress and more work on that side, for sure.”

Hülkenberg’s uncertainty about what caused the poor start

Nico Hülkenberg acknowledged the poor launch but lacked immediate answers about the underlying cause during the 2026 F1 Japanese GP. He indicated investigations would be needed to understand the specifics.

“I don’t know, I don’t know,” Hülkenberg began.

He admitted the issue would need further analysis with the team: “I know, obviously, I had a poor start. I don’t know the particulars, the ins and outs right now. And obviously, you need to have a look and speak with the engineers, but it’s obviously a thing. And not good,” he stated.

The poor start adds another area for Audi to investigate during the April break, with Hülkenberg and the team continuing to refine their package early in the season. Teammate Gabriel Bortoleto also lost four spots on the opening tour.

Energy management shapes Hülkenberg’s battle with teammate Bortoleto

Hülkenberg fought teammate Gabriel Bortoleto several times during the 2026 F1 Japanese GP. The exchanges showed how important energy management has become.

“Yeah, it’s, with that energy stuff, I mean, in a way, it’s interesting and fun, but at the same time, it’s also weird and frustrating,” he said.

“You do the move, but you really have to pick your fights and, you know, it’s so easy to overspend and then get a big derate and be a sitting duck.”

The Audi driver explained that managing energy use is now critical in wheel-to-wheel racing. Drivers must carefully choose when to attack, as overusing energy can leave them vulnerable on the following straights.

“And sometimes, you know, even the closing speeds are really, you know, immense. So, yeah, I don’t know. The race was probably entertaining on TV. There was probably lots going on. But, yeah, it’s different,” he concluded.

Hülkenberg’s 2026 F1 Japanese GP result came down to the start. Audi must improve launches and adapt to energy management demands.
