Australian racing talent James Wharton, fresh off his FIA Formula 2 debut in Qatar, is set to challenge for another motorsport championship title. The 19-year-old will compete in the Castrol Toyota FR Oceania Trophy (CTFROT), a series that serves as a valuable warm-up for his upcoming second season in FIA Formula 3, slated for 2026. Wharton will race under the banner of TJ Speed with HMD Motorsports, with the 2026 FR Oceania season beginning in January and culminating in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Highlands International Motorsport Park in February.
A promising start to 2026
Wharton’s decision to race in New Zealand aligns perfectly with his career trajectory. As a rising star in junior formula racing, he sees the opportunity as an ideal stepping stone ahead of his FIA Formula 3 campaign in 2026. Having honed his skills in Formula 4 and Formula Regional, Wharton now steps up to a championship with a reputation for nurturing world-class talent.
“This championship has a fine reputation throughout the world in junior formula racing, and I see it as a very natural step at exactly the right time in my career,” Wharton explained, confident that this move will further elevate his skills.
Career highlights and achievements
Wharton’s motorsport resume is already impressive. In 2023, he claimed the Formula 4 UAE Championship title and finished as runner-up in both the Euro F4 Championship and Formula Regional European Championship. Additionally, his experience racing at the prestigious Macau Grand Prix adds to his growing list of accomplishments. It’s evident that Wharton’s adaptability and skill in various series make him a formidable contender in New Zealand’s top-tier championship.
The Australian also made waves in the karting world, which laid the foundation for his rise through the ranks of junior motorsport. His brief tenure as a member of the Ferrari Junior Academy further attests to his potential, providing him with invaluable exposure and experience. Despite these successes, Wharton remains grounded, focusing on his continued development with a trusted team in a new and competitive environment.
A growing field in New Zealand
The FR Oceania Trophy (formerly FR Oceania Championship), already known for its high level of competition, continues to attract an increasing number of drivers aiming for Formula 1 and Indycar. Wharton is not alone in recognising the series’ significance, as it has quickly become a popular season opener for ambitious junior drivers. A recent strategic decision to reduce the championship’s season from five to four rounds has further cemented this trend, as it minimises clashes with northern hemisphere testing. As a result, the upcoming season promises an even more intense and diverse field of competitors, with Wharton among the top names expected to make waves.
The new challenge with TJ Speed
For his 2026 FR Oceania campaign, Wharton will team up with TJ Speed and HMD Motorsports, one of two new teams to enter the championship this season. With a fresh team dynamic and the support of experienced personnel, Wharton is well-positioned to make a strong impact. He is aware that the competition will be fierce, but he is also excited by the challenge ahead.
“I’ve got to trust in the process and do the best I can with a great team around me,” he said, determined to make the most of this opportunity.
