Rodrigo Gonzalez will return to the GB3 Championship for a full season in 2026, continuing his partnership with VRD Racing. The 19-year-old Mexican driver, who joined the team halfway through the 2025 season, will look to build on his experience as he competes alongside his younger brother, Patricio.

A solid introduction to GB3

Rodrigo Gonzalez made his GB3 debut in the second half of the 2025 season, racing in the final three rounds at Brands Hatch, Donington Park, and Monza. Despite entering the championship with limited experience compared to his competitors, Gonzalez made notable progress. His best finish came at Monza, where he secured a 10th-place result, demonstrating his ability to adapt and compete at a high level in his rookie year.

Strong background in American single-seaters

Before stepping up to GB3, Gonzalez had a successful run in American single-seater racing. He had been performing well in the USF Juniors category, where he was running in seventh place before his switch to Europe. Gonzalez completed the full 2024 USF Juniors season, and his performances helped pave the way for his move to GB3.

In addition to his time in USF Juniors, Gonzalez participated in the YACademy Winter Series, finishing eighth overall at the start of 2025. This experience was valuable in refining his driving skills and prepared him for the challenges of European racing.

Gonzalez’s quick progression in motorsport is even more impressive given that he only started karting three years ago. Initially competing in categories across Mexico, he moved up to international competition in 2023. His rapid rise through the ranks of motorsport is a testament to his talent and dedication.

Post-season testing for 2026

Following his maiden GB3 events, Gonzalez has been busy with a comprehensive post-season testing programme. He has focused on UK circuits and has also visited several European tracks that will feature in the 2026 GB3 calendar. This testing will be vital in helping him prepare for a full season, ensuring that he is fully equipped to take on the competition.

Rodrigo expressed his excitement about the opportunity to continue his development with VRD Racing. “I’m very excited to continue my development with VRD in 2026. The team has been incredible to work with, their professionalism, engineering strength, and attention to detail create an environment where you can really push yourself as a driver. I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve learned, taking another step forward, and fighting for stronger results throughout the season,” said Gonzalez.

VRD Racing Team Principal, Dan Mitchell, also expressed confidence in Gonzalez’s future prospects. “We’re very pleased to confirm that Rodrigo will return to GB3 with us in 2026. It was a big ask for him to come into the series halfway through last season, and he did really well to get up to speed despite the big head start the rest of the drivers had. Our post-season testing programme has been all about unlocking his confidence and gaining further experience of both the car and the circuits, and he will build on that again before the season starts in the Spring,” Mitchell explained.

Rodrigo Gonzalez is poised for an exciting 2026 season in the GB3 Championship. With his growing experience, strong work ethic, and the backing of VRD Racing, Gonzalez will aim to continue his development and push for stronger results. Fans can expect to see his continued rise in the competitive world of European motorsport.
