Rafael Villagómez enters the new FIA Formula 2 Championship season carrying the momentum of a strong finish to the previous campaign. After showing measurable progress towards the end of 2025 with Van Amersfoort Racing, Villagómez approaches the opening round of the 2026 F2 season in Melbourne with increased confidence and a clearly defined competitive focus.

Speaking during a pre-season press conference attended by Pit Debrief, he addressed his physical and mental condition ahead of the opener and outlined his principal objective for the year.

Villagómez enters 2026 with confidence shaped by 2025 progress

Villagómez identified the closing phase of the 2025 campaign as a significant moment in his development. He explained that ending the year competitively provided reassurance about the work completed with his team and strengthened his belief heading into 2026.

“Yeah, of course, we had a great end of the year, which was very, of course, pleasing, but also a boost for confidence. Obviously, coming into this year, after that, I think I never had that in my career, you know, ending up as isn’t that strong. So like I said, it just helps motivation.”

Physical and mental readiness ahead of Melbourne

Villagómez also highlighted the benefit of a shorter winter break between seasons. With limited downtime separating 2025 from 2026, he maintained continuity in both physical preparation and technical work.

“The break was pretty short. So that always helps to keep on the loop.”

He indicated that the brief off-season allowed him to retain rhythm rather than restart from scratch. That consistency now supports his readiness for the demands of the opening round.

When discussing his principal objective for the first race and the season more broadly, Villagómez said, “And the main goal, I think, for everyone in this championship is to win. So that’s the goal.”

Thus, Villagómez begins the 2026 F2 season with Van Amersfoort Racing with tangible progress behind him and a clearly defined aim ahead. He credits last year’s strong finish with reinforcing his confidence, values the continuity provided by a short break, and sets out a straightforward ambition as the lights prepare to go out in Melbourne.
