Valtteri Bottas signed with the F1 team Cadillac for the 2026 season, after a one-year break from F1. The FIA waived the penalty originally given to now Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a decision that even came up during pre-season testing in Bahrain. This penalty was planned to be applied to Bottas at the 2026 Australian GP.
During the race in Abu Dhabi, Bottas locked both front wheels and went straight into Kevin Magnussen’s Haas at the end of the first long back straight. The damage forced him to retire from the race. Instead of serving a drive-through penalty, the stewards gave him a five-place grid drop for his next race. Similarly, the penalty could have affected Bottas during the 2026 Australian GP if officials hadn’t waived it.
Reasons for waiving the grid penalty for Valtteri Bottas ahead of the Australian GP
At first, the penalty required the driver to serve it at the next Sprint or Race. A rule change introduced the following year requires the driver to serve grid penalties at their next Sprint or Race. The penalties apply only to events in which the driver actually participates. The penalty must be served within the subsequent twelve-month period. This rule did not exist when Valtteri Bottas originally received the penalty. Therefore, the revised regulation did not apply to his case.
Recent changes to the FIA’s sporting regulations updated Article B2.5.4 and made it retrospective. Section B(i) explains that officials consider cases of 15 or fewer cumulative “unserved grid penalties for the Race imposed in the previous twelve (12) months” when forming the grid. Because of this, Valtteri Bottas will not need to serve the penalty given to him at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In summary, Bottas will be able to race at the 2026 Australian GP with no concerns about the previous penalty.
Valtteri Bottas confirmed the news in an Instagram post before addressing it at Thursday’s FIA drivers’ press conference in Melbourne. Indeed, speculation about Bottas racing at the 2026 Australian GP has circulated since the announcement.
“You don’t follow me on Instagram? I just made an announcement 20 minutes ago. Apparently, it’s vanished thanks to some new regulation. So no grid penalty. It is good.”
This gives Valtteri Bottas a chance to compete in the 2026 F1 season with a fresh mindset and no distractions.
