Following total domination in qualifying, George Russell started on pole position from Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. A magnificent job from the Italian’s mechanics following his FP3 crash allowed him to repay them with a great result. Isack Hadjar went off from 3rd on his first start for Red Bull.
Home hero Oscar Piastri, who was due to start from P5, crashed on his way to the grid and was out before the race even got going. Nico Hülkenberg also did not take the start due to issues with his Audi.
Running in P6 on lap 11, Isack Hadjar had a spectacular engine failure, leading to a VSC.
Four laps later, Alonso looked to have joined the Frenchman in the DNF club as he stopped with an issue in the pits. However, he returned later, 10 laps down.
On lap 18, Valtteri Bottas conked out near the pit lane, leading to another VSC. That left us with 19 cars.
Eventually both Aston Martin cars dropped out as expected, meaning 17 cars were left out on track with 20 laps to go.
