Kimi Antonelli bagged his first ever Grand Prix position on Saturday afternoon. The Italian became the youngest polesitter in the history of the sport by almost two years. George Russell joined him on the front row after a big scare early in Q3. Ferrari and McLaren locked out the second and third rows respectively.
Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, Isack Hadjar and Ollie Bearman completed the top 10 on the grid.
In an extraordinary twist, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Gabriel Bortoleto all ended up in their garages before the race as technical gremlins hit McLaren and Audi ahead of the 56-lap contest. Alex Albon was due to start the pit lane after more set-up changes to his car. In the end, none of them started.
On the first lap, Isack Hadjar had a big spin battling Ollie Bearman, while Sergio Pérez did the same thing as he made light contact with teammate Valtteri Bottas.
A Safety Car was required on lap 10 as Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin conked out on track thanks to battery issues. That meant only 17 cars were running after that. It became 16 with just over 20 laps to go as Fernando Alonso pulled into the garage to retire due to the vibrations.
On lap 45, Max Verstappen slowed from P6 and his day was done. That reduced the field to only 15 runners.
Kimi Antonelli made history as the Italian driver bagged his first victory in Formula 1.
