Defending champion Alex Palou started on pole position as he responded to Kyle Kirkwood’s Arlington win in style. A messy Fast 6 for the title leader saw him on the third row. David Malukas joined the Spaniard on the front row, with Graham Rahal a very strong P3 on Saturday afternoon.
On lap 35, Rinus VeeKay spun after trying to pass Alex Rossi into the turn 5 hairpin. As Christian Lundgaard tried to lap Louis Foster into turn 16, the pair almost touched.
Closing in on Alex Palou before the final round of stops, Christian Lundgaard looked to be in with a shot of a famous win from P10 in the grid. However, a botched stop cost him over 10s, dropping behind Graham Rahal instead of potentially leading the race. It left car #10 out front by over 10 seconds.
Malukas, Kirkwood, Armstrong, Dixon, Ferrucci, Ericsson and Newgarden completed the top 10 following the final round of stops.
Following his scary crash on Saturday morning, Scott McLaughlin had a very difficult Sunday and was comfortably outside the top 10 at the end in P16. Pato O’Ward also had a shocker, coming home in P17.
With three laps left, Lundgaard piled the pressure on Rahal and eventually used his superior pace to get him into turn 5. The RLL driver held off David Malukas on the final tour. Out front, Alex Palou was in complete control to take a crucial win. Championship leader heading into it Kyle Kirkwood bagged a very solid P5.
