The opening day of 2026 GTWC Europe track action at Circuit Paul Ricard delivered three distinct but closely connected sessions, each offering valuable insight into the competitive order ahead of race day.
Firstly, Giacomo Petrobelli led the Bronze Test with a narrow margin, setting the tone for a tightly packed field. Subsequently, Jules Gounon placed Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing on top in Free Practice 1 with a late improvement. Finally, Fabian Schiller ensured Mercedes-AMG remained the benchmark by topping Free Practice 2 under more representative evening conditions.
Together, the sessions highlighted both the strength of Mercedes-AMG machinery and the depth of competition across all classes, setting up an intriguing battle for qualifying and the six-hour race.
2026 GTWC Europe Endurance Cup: Circuit Paul Ricard: Bronze Test: Petrobelli edges tight field

Giacomo Petrobelli delivered a decisive performance in the Bronze Test, setting a 1m55.065s lap in the #56 Ecurie Ecosse Blackthorn Aston Martin. Crucially, his time proved just enough to hold off Charles Dawson in the #222 2 Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG, underlining the fine margins at play.
Behind them, Bashar Mardini secured third in the #89 Lionspeed GP Porsche, followed by Rinat Salikhov for Winward Racing and Ahmad Al-Harthy in the #42 Oman Racing by Century Motorsport BMW. As a result, multiple manufacturers featured prominently at the front.
However, the session also brought an early setback. The #34 Walkenhorst Motorsport Aston Martin withdrew after Jamie Day’s crash in the Prologue, reducing the field to 58 cars. Despite this, the Bronze Test provided a competitive and informative start to the weekend.

All to play for ahead of race day

Overall, the opening day at Circuit Paul Ricard has provided a clear yet intriguing picture of the competitive landscape. While Mercedes-AMG entries have consistently set the pace across both practice sessions, the margins remain exceptionally tight, with Audi, Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren all demonstrating the potential to challenge.
Moreover, the standout performances from drivers such as Benjamin Paque highlight the depth of talent across the grid, particularly among emerging contenders. At the same time, experienced names continue to deliver consistency, ensuring a balanced and unpredictable field.
Crucially, the mix of clean running and minor interruptions has allowed teams to gather essential data without compromising preparation. Therefore, as the focus shifts to qualifying and the six-hour race, no single manufacturer holds a decisive advantage.
Instead, the stage is set for a fiercely contested battle, where strategy, execution and consistency will likely prove just as important as outright pace.
