Heading into Long Beach, Kyle Kirkwood led the IndyCar standings on 156 points, just two ahead of Alex Palou after his dominant Barber weekend, with Christian Lundgaard third and David Malukas fourth as the field remained tightly packed behind.

The session began slowly before race control brought out a red flag with 30 minutes remaining after Mick Schumacher stopped at the exit of the fountain. The rookie asked whether he should restart the car, but his team instructed him to stay put, costing him valuable time on a circuit that was new to him.

Running resumed with 25 minutes to go, with only seven drivers on the board as Kyffin Simpson led on a 1:11.626 ahead of fellow rookie Caio Collet. As the pace improved, Alexander Rossi locked up at Turn 9 but held the car and moved up to second with a 1:09.291, before Alex Palou went fastest.

Felix Rosenqvist also had a moment at the final hairpin but managed to keep control, while Schumacher remained in the garage with 10 minutes left as team-mates Louis Foster and Graham Rahal focused on gathering data.

In the closing stages, times continued to shuffle, with Sting Ray Robb at the bottom of the order on a 1:10.241, while Pato O’Ward ran third and Christian Lundgaard sixth. Nolan Siegel remained down in 19th as he searched for pace.

The session ended prematurely with just over three minutes remaining, as race control issued a second red flag due to debris on track.
