Kimi Antonelli has underlined his growing confidence within the Mercedes Formula 1 Team, as the young driver continues to establish himself as a genuine contender alongside George Russell in the 2026 F1 season.
After a strong start to the campaign, Antonelli has begun to shift from a learning role to that of an equal competitor within the team. However, the Italian made it clear that the internal dynamic at Mercedes remains unchanged, built on mutual respect and shared ambition.
A balanced partnership with Russell
Speaking about his relationship with Russell, Antonelli dismissed any suggestion of tension as both Mercedes drivers push for strong F1 results.
“Well, I think the relationship is very strong and it hasn’t changed. There’s a lot of respect between us, and we’ve been working very well so far,” he said.
“And there’s a very good dynamic in the team. Of course, I feel like I can be a challenger, and that’s what I’m here for.”
Rather than creating friction, the competitive environment appears to be strengthening Mercedes’ overall performance, with both drivers contributing to a cohesive team effort.
A clear focus on winning
Kimi Antonelli has made no attempt to downplay his ambitions. Despite only being in second F1 season, he has set his sights firmly on victories and titles.
“I want to race to win. I want to race to win races and championships. So that’s my goal,” he explained.
His mindset reflects a broader shift in approach. While earlier races saw him building experience, recent performances suggest a driver increasingly comfortable fighting at the front.
Making the most of a strong package
Mercedes’ competitive form in 2026 has opened the door for both Antonelli and Russell to challenge consistently at the sharp end of the F1 grid.
“Definitely this year is a massive opportunity for all of us, especially also for me and George, because we have a very strong car,” Antonelli said.
“Both of us don’t want to waste this opportunity, so we’re going to do our best.”
That urgency has become a defining feature of the team’s campaign, with both drivers aware that strong machinery must translate into results.
Team goals remain the priority
Despite individual ambitions, Antonelli stressed the importance of maintaining harmony within the team as Mercedes pursues both championships.
“We’re also very aware that it’s very important to keep a good dynamic in the team, and that’s what we’re doing,” he added.
“Because of course we have our own goals, which are to win and to be the best. But at the same time, we want to help the team in the best way possible to achieve their goal, which is to win the Constructors’ Championship as well.”
Confidence growing with experience
As the season progresses, Antonelli’s confidence continues to grow. His performances and mindset suggest a driver no longer content with simply learning, but ready to compete at the highest level.
“I believe that our relationship is strong and will be strong for the rest of the year,” he said.
With Mercedes firmly in the fight and Antonelli embracing his role within the team, the 2026 season is shaping into a defining chapter in the young driver’s career.
