After a brief delay, the first and only F2 Free Practice session of the 2026 Canadian GP weekend got underway at 10:09 local time, marking the series’ debut at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. With little prior data available for the circuit, the drivers wasted no time heading out on track. However, MP Motorsport’s Gabriele Minì suffered an early setback after stopping at the pit exit, forcing his team to wheel the car back to the garage before he later rejoined the session.

Following several exploratory laps, Invicta Racing’s Joshua Dürksen set the first representative benchmark with a 1:25.319, ahead of Kush Maini and Roman Bilinski. As track conditions improved, Martinius Stenshorne briefly moved to the top before Dürksen reclaimed first place with a 1:23.519. Championship leader Alex Dunne soon joined the fight at the front, though initially more than two tenths off the pace.

The timesheets continued to shuffle as Laurens van Hoepen and Nikola Tsolov each enjoyed spells at the top, while Stenshorne, Dino Beganovic and Nico Varrone emerged as strong contenders. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Dunne surged to the top with a 1:22.524, moving ahead of Tsolov and Stenshorne. At the other end of the order, Mari Boya struggled for pace, while Minì remained near the back after his disrupted start.

As tyre degradation increased in the closing stages, Dunne retained his advantage despite late improvements from several rivals, including Colton Herta, who climbed to fourth. The session also featured a brief yellow flag after Rafael Villagómez spun into the Wall of Champions, damaging his front wing before recovering. Another brief yellow flag involved Colton Herta, who spun, and Varrone, who came to a stop after the chequered flag. Maini, meanwhile, retired early from the session.
