The GB3 series has confirmed that the third race of the weekend at Spa has been abandoned due to terrible weather conditions at the legendary Belgian venue. The Formula Regional European Championship also has had to rejig their schedule this weekend because of the torrential rain that has fallen at the venue over the last few hours.
Race 1 had been due to start on Saturday morning. Abbi Pulling made history on Friday as the F1 Academy champion of 2024 put her Rodin Motorsport car on pole position for the opening contest of the weekend. Former F3 driver Nikita Bedrin smashed in an all-time lap record to take P1 for the second race.
Heading into this weekend, Nikita Bedrin is the championship leader on 76 points, nine clear of Maxim Rehm. Doing a part-time season because of his Formula 3 commitments, Jin Nakamura was 3rd in the standings. Martin Molnár (9th) and Abbi Pulling (20th) will be hoping to make significant progress in the table through the two races this weekend.
Race 1 is due to take place later this afternoon local time, providing the weather improves. Alongside the rain, low visibility was a huge issue before they called it earlier today.
GB3 statement on the third race at Spa getting abandoned:
“The race start procedure for the first GB3 Championship race of the weekend has been abandoned due to constant heavy rain at Spa-Francorchamps this morning. An attempt was made to start the contest behind the safety car, but the race was red flagged during the first lap, with conditions deemed too unsafe to continue by race control.
“As per GB3 regulations, race two this afternoon will instead be held as race one, and carrying over the grid formation with Abbi Pulling on pole. Race three tomorrow will become race two with Nikita Bedrin on pole.
