Heading into the weekend, Kimi Antonelli sits 43 points clear of his teammate George Russell in the Drivers’ Standings after claiming victory in a chaotic 2026 F1 Canadian GP. Meanwhile, Monaco’s home hero Charles Leclerc announced a contract extension with Ferrari, while McLaren celebrates its 1000th Grand Prix.
The one-hour FP1 session got underway with the 2022 F1 Monaco GP winner Sergio Perez leading the pack onto the Circuit de Monaco. Early on, both Racing Bulls drivers reported steering issues on the radio. Lewis Hamilton led the timesheets 10 minutes into the session with a 1:15.617, followed by strong pace from the Red Bull and McLaren drivers.
Leclerc went faster than his teammate, taking the top spot by 0.557s before Antonelli jumped into P2. However, Hamilton soon knocked Antonelli down, taking P2. Halfway into the FP1 Monaco GP session, the slippery surface flag was displayed at the beginning of the third sector due to debris.
Drivers continued to push the limits as Leclerc slightly clipped a barrier while Hamilton locked up, going down the run-off road at Sainte Devote. Moments after Antonelli went fastest, Isack Hadjar brought out the first red flag of the weekend after sliding and spinning into the barrier at the Swimming Pool chicane. The session resumed with 15 minutes remaining.
After switching to medium tires, Leclerc reclaimed the top spot after completing his best lap with all purple sectors. Though a second red flag was brought out in the final moments as Fernando Alonso lost control and clipped the wall, leaving a piece of his front wing on the track.
