Gabriele Minì extended his lead in the 2026 F2 Drivers’ Championship standings after finishing fifth in the Sprint Race at the Austrian GP.

The MP Motorsport driver increased his total from 86 to 90 points, while closest rival Nikola Tsolov recovered from an opening-lap incident to finish eighth and move onto 81. Consequently, Minì’s Championship advantage increased from six to nine points.

John Bennett made the largest gain after snatching his maiden F2 victory from Sebastián Montoya on the final lap. The TRIDENT driver climbed seven positions to 14th, while Montoya moved ahead of Joshua Dürksen into 11th and Rafael Villagómez scored his first points with third place.

Minì extends his F2 Championship lead

Minì entered the Austrian weekend six points ahead of Tsolov after finishing third in the Barcelona Feature Race. He started the Sprint Race from sixth and remained inside the leading group as the field managed its tyres during the hot conditions at Spielberg.

The Italian eventually finished fifth and collected four points, increasing his total from 86 to 90. Although he missed the podium, Minì strengthened his position because Tsolov only added one point.

Minì now leads Tsolov by nine points. However, the Bulgarian will have another opportunity to respond in Sunday’s Feature Race, where the larger points allocation could again alter the title battle.

Tsolov salvages one point after opening-lap contact

Tsolov’s Sprint Race nearly ended at Turn 3 when Dürksen made contact with the Campos Racing driver during a multi-car incident. The collision dropped Tsolov down the order, while Dürksen, Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, Oliver Goethe and Emmerson Fittipaldi all suffered significant consequences from the incident.

Nevertheless, Tsolov recovered through the field and passed teammate Noel León late in the race to reach eighth. The result added one point to his total, moving him from 80 to 81.

The Bulgarian retained second in the standings but lost another three points to Minì. He now holds a nine-point advantage over Alexander Dunne in third.

Dunne moves ahead of Câmara into third

Dunne strengthened his Championship campaign with fourth place for Rodin Motorsport.

The Irish driver overtook Minì during the early stages before closing on Rafael Câmara. He then used DRS to pass the Brazilian at Turn 4 and remained ahead after their battle resumed following the Virtual Safety Car.

Fourth place earned Dunne five points, increasing his total from 67 to 72. He moved ahead of Câmara and climbed from fourth to third in the Drivers’ Championship.

Dunne now trails Minì by 18 points and Tsolov by nine. He holds a two-point advantage over Câmara ahead of the Feature Race.

Câmara drops to fourth after five-second penalty

Câmara initially crossed the line sixth after spending much of the race inside the leading group. However, officials handed him a five-second penalty for causing a collision, dropping him to ninth in the final classification.

Despite falling outside the regular Sprint Race points positions, Câmara retained the fastest lap after recording a 1m18.962s. He therefore added one point and increased his total from 69 to 70.

Dunne’s five-point score moved the Rodin driver ahead, dropping Câmara from third to fourth. Nevertheless, the Brazilian remains only two points behind Dunne and 20 away from Minì.

Maini moves ahead of van Hoepen on countback

Kush Maini finished seventh for ART Grand Prix and collected two points.

The Indian driver increased his total from 41 to 43, drawing level with Laurens van Hoepen. However, Maini moves ahead into eighth because his Barcelona Sprint Race victory gives him the stronger countback result.

Van Hoepen finished 15th and failed to add to his total. As a result, the TRIDENT driver drops from eighth to ninth, while Ritomo Miyata remains 10th on 30 points following his penalised 17th-place finish.

Montoya climbs to 11th after narrowly missing victory

Montoya led most of the Sprint Race after overtaking Bennett at Turn 4 on Lap 8.

The PREMA Racing driver appeared set to claim victory until the final lap, when he ran wide at Turn 1. Bennett remained close before completing a switchback at Turn 4 and taking the lead, leaving Montoya to finish second.

The result earned Montoya eight points and increased his total from 20 to 28. He climbed from 12th to 11th and moved seven points ahead of Dürksen, who dropped to 12th after retiring.

Montoya also broke clear of Colton Herta, who remains 13th on 20 points following his late retirement.

Bennett jumps seven positions with maiden F2 victory

Bennett delivered the largest movement in the Drivers’ Championship after securing his first F2 victory and podium. The TRIDENT driver led from the start before Montoya overtook him on Lap 8. However, Bennett kept the PREMA within reach, managed his tyres and returned to DRS range during the closing laps.

He then capitalised on Montoya’s mistake and completed the winning move at Turn 4 on the final lap. The victory provided Bennett with 10 points and increased his Championship total from seven to 17.

Bennett climbed seven positions from 21st to 14th. He now sits three points behind Herta and two ahead of Roman Bilinski.

Bilinski climbs to 15th with sixth place

Bilinski added three points after finishing sixth for DAMS Lucas Oil. The Polish driver increased his total from 12 to 15 and moved from 16th to 15th in the standings. Bennett’s victory prevented him from making a larger gain, but Bilinski still moved ahead of Varrone.

Nicolás Varrone remained on 14 points and dropped from 14th to 16th. Inthraphuvasak also lost two positions, falling from 15th to 17th after his first-lap retirement.

Villagómez scores first points with podium

Villagómez converted third on the reverse grid into his first F2 podium and points. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver remained behind Bennett and Montoya throughout the contest and placed increasing pressure on the PREMA driver during the closing stages. Although he could not take second, he secured six points with third place.

Villagómez remains 22nd because every driver ahead of him has scored at least 10 points. However, he now holds six points and has reduced the gap to Mari Boya, Enzo Fittipaldi and Cian Shields to four.

Rodin Motorsport added five points through Dunne’s fourth place, while Stenshorne finished outside the points. The team moved from 115 to 120 and reduced Campos Racing’s lead from 19 to 15 points.

MP Motorsport remains third after Minì contributed four points, increasing its total from 98 to 102. Câmara’s fastest-lap point moved Invicta Racing onto 91, leaving it 11 points behind MP Motorsport.

TRIDENT climbs to sixth after Bennett victory

TRIDENT made the most significant gain in the Teams’ Championship after Bennett’s victory. The British driver supplied all 10 of the team’s Sprint Race points, with van Hoepen finishing outside the top eight. TRIDENT increased its total from 50 to 60 and moved ahead of ART Grand Prix into sixth.

Feature Race offers another opportunity for major changes

Minì strengthened his Drivers’ Championship lead during the Sprint Race, but the gaps between the leading contenders remain relatively small. Dunne and Câmara sit within 20 points of the Italian, while Tsolov remains firmly involved at nine points behind.

The Feature Race will offer a larger points total, with León starting from pole position. Therefore, the Mexican has an opportunity to close the 16-point gap to fourth-placed Câmara, while the leading Championship contenders must work forward from lower starting positions.
