Noel León secured his maiden Formula 2 Feature Race win during the 2026 F2 Budapest Round at the Hungarian GP after an early pit stop was rewarded by a well-timed Virtual Safety Car (VSC).
The Campos Racing driver opened the Hungarian weekend with P17 in Free Practice before finding stronger pace to take P3 in Qualifying and P9 in the Sprint. Starting from the second row in the Feature Race, León moved into P2 on the opening lap before struggling to keep up with race leader Kush Maini.
Running 5.2s behind Maini, León pitted on Lap 16, a decision that proved decisive when a VSC was deployed moments later. León then inherited the race lead on Lap 32 and, despite late pressure from Maini and Rafael Câmara, held on to claim victory by just 0.8s.
León on claiming Feature Race victory in Budapest
Reflecting on his win during the FIA F2 post-Feature Race Press Conference, attended by Pit Debrief, León shared:
“It feels great to be honest. Today we did a very good race. We got a bit lucky with the VSC on our pit stop but it’s been a good weekend and to be honest I’m very happy to bounce back like this after a tough weekend in Spa. And yeah, best way to go to the summer.”
He went on to explain the thinking behind the team’s early pit stop, which, combined with a timely VSC, proved crucial to his victory.
“Yeah, in that moment I was just driving around because from Lap 6 to Lap 10 I was screaming on the radio to box and my engineer told me to shut up and drive. So from that lap onwards I started to only drive and I let him decide when to stop. To be honest, the soft today was quite impressive. I didn’t, I think all of us didn’t expect to drive that long on a soft tyre. So yeah, it was a good call. We got lucky at the end of the day and yeah, that’s give us the win.”
Heading into the summer break, León added that the win could not have come at a better time: “Yeah, it’s perfect timing. I think so. It cannot be even better to be in the Feature Race, you know, in Budapest, and now to move home to holidays a bit and we will work harder for months.”
León: “It’s been a special weekend”
When asked by Pit Debrief at what point he believed victory was within reach and what his maiden F2 Feature Race win meant to him, León said:
“Yes, it means a lot to me. It’s been a special weekend. We’ve been quite strong. P3 in Qualifying. And now we did a good start. We did a good first stint. Yeah, a bit lucky with the VSC at the end. But I never thought that it was going to be a win after the VSC because I started to get some issues with the brakes and it was very difficult to manage,” he noted.
“So I knew that the Kush was flat out. And at some point, they were catching me quite a lot. So yeah, it was not easy. But I think the last 10 laps, I drove very well. My last sector was always quite strong. So he never got the chance to be close and that gave me the win today.”
Tyre management proved decisive
On the other hand, asked about the biggest challenge of the 2026 F2 Budapest Feature Race, León pointed to tyre management. Tyre management remained central throughout the 2026 F2 Budapest Round as high track temperatures easily compromised race pace through degradation and overheating.
“What can I say? I think so… time management was key,” he began. “You know, to control all the slides, all the lock-ups, and all this stuff was quite important. Yeah, that was a tough moment, to be honest. I think so.”
“Being in clean air helps you a bit. That’s why we were a bit off pace in the first laps to be like up with Kush and maybe trying to recover that gap at the end of the stint. But he seems that he didn’t have that. So, yeah, that was a bit of the hardest moment of the race because he was not there. And as soon as you manage everything, you could stay longer on the tyres. So, yeah, I think the strategy, as we see today, was key.”
Consistency remains León’s main focus
Looking at the first half of his 2026 F2 campaign, the Mexican driver acknowledged that while he has shown flashes of potential, he lacks consistency.
“Yeah, I mean, my season has been quite tough. I have a couple of tough moments. I have very good moments at the moment. I have a Feature Race win, two sprints, pole position, and a fastest lap. So, I’ve been doing everything that is possible in the championship, but it’s true that consistency has not been there. So, we still miss that.”
León’s worst weekend yet arrived during the Spa-Francorchamps Round, where technical issues and a disqualification beyond his control left him empty-handed. However, with five rounds remaining, the Campos Racing driver now believed that his Feature Race win in Budapest marks a turning point in his campaign.
“After Spa, I say that this was going to be the weekend that turns around the situation, and we keep moving forward for the rest of the season. So, I’m in a good momentum,” he continued, before revealing what he will do over break. “It’s time to go home, enjoy a little bit with the family. But I think so, as all the drivers, we get used to our routines. So, obviously, there is a compromise. And obviously, every time training a bit, but obviously not a lot of the weight.”
A close battle for the win
In response to a question from Pit Debrief, León analyzed the Feature Race’s closing stages, explaining how his early pit stop held both advantages and disadvantages as he developed brake issues near the end.
“Yes, as they say, I stopped quite early. So, at some moment, I was a bit faster. But then, at some moment, they were a bit faster than me. So, I started to get some issues with the brakes. So, I couldn’t extract all the pace of the car. And in that moment, for me, it was very difficult to control the locks, and I was watching them catching me, and I was a bit worried.”
Despite the brake issues, León remained particularly strong through the final sector, preventing Maini and Câmara from getting close enough to attempt an overtake into Turn 1.
“But, as Kush said, my last sector was very strong,” he said. “They never got an easy chance to send it in T1. And I think that’s why we got the win today. Because, as soon as we will start battle, I will lose the battle with them. Because I didn’t have enough brakes to battle with them.”
