Maro Engel reclaimed the 2026 DTM Drivers’ Championship lead after securing third place in Race 1 at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
The Mercedes-AMG driver passed Luca Engstler at the start and initially followed race leader Thomas Preining. However, tyre management gradually separated the leading pair before a pit-stop issue cost Engel second place.
Nevertheless, Engel completed a clean race, collected valuable points and strengthened his title challenge at the halfway stage of the season.
Engel accepts P3 after maximising available result in 2026 DTM Oschersleben Race 1
Engel viewed third place as a strong outcome after Preining and Manthey controlled the opening race of the weekend.
Although Engel wanted to remain ahead of Engstler, he acknowledged his rival’s performance and focused on the championship value of another podium.
“Pretty much maximised what we had. Obviously, it would have been nice to stay ahead of Luca, but he drove a great race and they deserve it. So, for us, good day, clean race and good points.”
Consequently, Engel avoided unnecessary risks while several championship rivals endured more difficult races.
Moreover, his consistency allowed him to convert a competitive starting position into another significant points haul.
Strong start moves Engel into second
Engel reacted quickly when the lights went out and drew alongside Engstler before Turn 1.
He then completed the pass and settled into second behind Preining. Initially, the Mercedes-AMG driver remained close enough to pressure the Manthey Porsche.
However, Engel soon recognised that Preining had begun managing his tyres. As the stint progressed, the race leader increased his pace and moved beyond Engel’s reach.
“Yeah, I was able to follow Thomas quite well at the start and get my car alongside a little bit ahead into turn one and made the pass. At that point, I tried to follow Thomas, but I realised quite quickly that he was managing his tyres. And at the end of the stint, I couldn’t follow anymore, so I dropped away a little bit.
“And then, obviously, we had an issue with the pit stop, which we’ll analyse, look at what happened, make sure we improve there. And after that, it was a relatively lonely race to P3.”
Therefore, Engel turned his attention towards protecting second as the pit-stop phase approached.
Pit-stop issue costs Engel second place
Mercedes-AMG encountered an issue during Engel’s mandatory stop, allowing Engstler to regain the position he had lost at the start.
Engel could not respond after returning to the circuit. Instead, he found himself isolated in third, with Preining and Engstler ahead and no immediate pressure from behind.
Nevertheless, the setback did not compromise his podium. Engel maintained a controlled pace and brought the car home without further trouble.
The team will now analyse the stop and identify the cause before the next race. That review could prove crucial as small operational details increasingly influence the championship battle.
Engel focuses on 2026 DTM points during Preining’s dominant weekend at Oschersleben
Preining set the benchmark throughout the opening stages of the Oschersleben weekend.
Consequently, Engel recognised that challenging the Manthey driver for victory would have required more performance than Mercedes-AMG had available. Instead, he focused on extracting the strongest possible result from his own package.
“Yeah, absolutely. It’s been a strong first half of the season. Today’s been a good day. I don’t think there was any way to have any chance to get past Thomas today. Actually, the whole weekend so far, they’ve been very dominant. So those are the days I think you have to take what’s available on the table. And yeah, we certainly came close to the maximum, but nonetheless, a good day for us.”
That approach rewarded Engel with the championship lead as the season reached its halfway point.
Rather than force an unrealistic victory challenge, he secured the points available and limited the consequences of the pit-stop problem.
Championship lead strengthens Engel’s position
Engel’s podium continued a consistent opening half of the campaign and placed him in a strong position for the remainder of the Oschersleben weekend.
However, the Mercedes-AMG driver still identified areas for improvement. In particular, the team must address the pit-stop issue before another delay costs a more substantial result.
Nevertheless, Engel left Race 1 with a podium and the championship lead. Therefore, despite missing out on second, he achieved his primary objective by maximising the opportunities available during a weekend dominated by Preining.
